Synopsis
Escroc à la petite semaine, Joseph Peretti ne travaille bien qu'en association avec son fils Micka. L'ennui c'est que ce dernier est de plus en plus réticent : il est las de se faire traiter comme un moins que rien par son paternel et ne rêve que d'une chose, devenir acteur. Oui mais voilà, l’argent ne coule pas à flot chez les Peretti. Les médiocres bénéfices des entourloupes montées par Joseph n'y suffiront pas. D'autant qu'avec une fille célibataire enceinte, une grand-mère à charge, une femme qui ne travaille pas et un propriétaire qui veut récupérer ses loyers - et le fait bien sentir, les lendemains ne chantent guère.Actors

Jacques Mazel, the son of a wealthy merchant, and Patricia Amoretti, daughter of a well-digger, live in a small village in the Provence region of France while Europe is at the brink of World War I. She has just turned 18 and is smitten with the handsome Jacques when he carries her across a stream to bring lunch to her father who is digging a well. After their second encounter Jacques, a French Air Force pilot, is unexpectedly reassigned. He must leave immediately to replace a pilot who recently broke his leg. Because he cannot meet Patricia as planned the next morning, he leaves an explanatory letter for her but his overly protective mother burns the letter. Patricia concludes Jacques rejected her because they come from different social classes. Later, Patricia discovers that Jacques has left her with child. The parents of Jacques reject the idea that their son conceived a child out of wedlock and refuse to acknowledge the baby. Her father, who had idolized her, sends Patricia to live with his sister in another village to spare his four other daughters from learning of the illegitimate child. Patricia declines an offer of marriage from her father's friend, Félipe, partly because her younger sister, Amanda, has a crush on him. Eventually, Jacques, who was thought to have been shot down by the Germans, returns from a POW camp and learns he has a son.

Martin Kazinski (Kad Merad) is a middle-aged working stiff who, on the train to work one morning, discovers he has inexplicably become a celebrity. His simple life is turned upside down. As he asks "Why?" his life becomes more and more complicated. He sees a lawyer for help in getting people to leave him alone, and is put in contact with a media agent, Fleur Arnaud, whose efforts inadvertently make him more and more famous. When he appears on Fleur's television show, everything he says is twisted into a symbolic statement, and the more he pleads for his privacy, the more famous he becomes. He is told he is causing disruption at his job and is pursued by well-wishers and paparazzi. Others are jealous and resent his "success." Fleur and he grow close, though she is a having an affair with the manipulative producer of her television program.

Années 70 à la Croix-Rousse, la vie insouciante et heureuse de trois sœurs au caractères très différents. Amélie, a young Belgian woman (played by Sylvie Testud), having spent her childhood in Japan, decides to return to live there and tries to integrate into Japanese society. She is determined to be a "real Japanese" before her year contract runs out, though it is precisely this determination that is incompatible with Japanese humility. Though she is hired for a choice position as a translator at an import/export firm, her inability to understand Japanese cultural norms results in increasingly humiliating demotions. Though Amelie secretly adulates her immediate supervisor, Ms Mori (Kaori Tsuji), the latter takes sadistic pleasure in belittling Amelie. Mori finally manages to break Amelie's will by making her the bathroom attendant, and is delighted when Amelie tells her that she will not renew her contract. Amelie realizes that she is finally a real Japanese when she enters the company president's office "with fear and trembling," which was possible only because her determination had been broken by Mori's systematic humiliation.

A bientôt cinquante ans, Simon est un violoniste émérite et désabusé. Faute de mieux, il échoue dans un collège parisien pour enseigner le violon aux élèves de la classe de 6ème de Farid. Ses méthodes d’enseignement rigides rendent ses débuts laborieux et ne facilitent pas ses rapports avec des élèves difficiles. Arnold est fasciné par le violon, sa gestuelle et ses sons.
