L'Apparition est un film dramatique français coécrit et réalisé par Xavier Giannoli, sorti en 2018.

Synopsis

Jacques est un grand reporter respecté travaillant pour un grand quotidien régional français. Journaliste talentueux et impartial, il vit reclus au retour d'un reportage en Syrie au cours duquel son photographe et ami a été tué. Il est alors contacté par un membre de la Congrégation pour la doctrine de la foi du Vatican lui demandant d'effectuer une mission particulière : faire partie d'une commission canonique chargée d'enquêter sur plusieurs apparitions de la Vierge Marie dont a été témoin une jeune fille, Anna, dans une petite ville des Alpes françaises. Alors que des milliers de pèlerins viennent se recueillir sur le lieu des apparitions présumées, Jacques rencontre la sensible et dévote Anna, dont la foi est confrontée aux nombreuses sollicitations qu'elle reçoit. Il découvre progressivement les motivations cachées et les pressions à l’œuvre autour d'Anna, et les mystères qui entourent les apparitions. Il est également confronté aux opinions opposées au sein de la commission. Et l'enquête qu'il mène va bouleverser ses croyances.

Shortly after the death of Charlemagne, a woman called Joan is born in Ingelheim am Rhein. She is the daughter of a village priest (Iain Glen). He also rules his wife (Jördis Triebel) and family with a rod of iron, though his Saxon wife still secretly worships the pagan god Wotan. Even so, Joan grows up to be an articulate girl, who intensively studies the Bible, unbeknownst to her father. After her eldest brother's sudden death, their father wants to send his second son John to the cathedral school in Dorestad, but when the teacher Aesculapius (Edward Petherbridge) visits them in Ingelheim, Joan proves to be far more capable of dealing with the Scriptures than John. Against her father's wishes, Joan is taught by Aesculapius, who introduces her to literary works such as Homer's Odyssey.

Christine is a wheelchair-using woman with severe multiple sclerosis. In order to escape her isolation, she makes a journey to Lourdes, the iconic site of Catholic pilgrimage in the Pyrenees Mountains, along with other people with varying disabilities. During her stay she begins to regain the use of her limbs. This is in contrast with others, who appear to have stronger faith than Christine but experience only slight, passing improvement. Her fellow pilgrims are eager to call it a miracle; however, as the pilgrimage draws to a close, exactly how accurate a claim this is becomes uncertain.

In August 1938, Switzerland closed its borders to Jewish refugees that tried to refuge the Nazi regime. Every migration of Jewish people by crossing the green border to Switzerland was declared by the Swiss government as illegally, and refugees had to been sent back to Germany respectively Austria. Furthermore, hundreds of people without a valid visa, tried to cross the green border to be secure in Switzerland from the Holocaust, most of them by crossing the border to the Canton of St. Gallen. Those "illegal migration" and the background of those border crossings, its support by officials and citizens in Switzerland, got in the focus of the Swiss immigration police. Its senior offical, Heinrich Rothmund (Robert Hunger-Bühler), ordered the police inspector Robert Frei (Max Simonischek), a ruthless and authoritarian faithful official, in the canton of St. Gallen to investigate. The Jewish refugees appear to be supported by parts of the local population, with approval of the police commandant of the Canton St. Gallen, Paul Grüninger (Stefan Kurt). Frei's investigation confirm the suspicion that police captain Grüninger allowed Jewish refugees to enter without a valid visa, he also falsifies documents and personally helps refugees to illegally cross the border into Switzerland. Grüninger indeed confesses, but he does not handle, so his opinion, against the law and thus against the state security of Switzerland. His motives are also based on pure humanity. Frei is overawed by Grüningers integracy, intransigence and his personal sight, and he gets in doubt of the legality of the investigations.

He has sex with Monika; witnessed by most nuns in the convent. Monika is later dismissed. Emanuelle later leaves at her own free-will.
