The movie opens in Sydney, Australia where Nicholas and his best friend Felix, gazing at the toy shop window seeing what Santa's workshop looks like. They reside at the orphanage where all the Children were orphans. The bully, Grincroch, picks on Nicholas that Santa doesn't exist as he asks him that he's afraid of heights. But, Nicholas manages to retrieve a toy for the child after climbing up the orphanage fence. Nicholas was pure of heart believing Christmas and Santa. But on Christmas Eve, Nicholas's best friend Felix, gets adopted by his new parents and gives his lucky charm to Nicholas as Felix with his new parents move to America.

15-year-old Max sets off for Saint-Hilare in search of his father, the famous troubadour Johnny Bigoude, who disappeared shortly before Max's birth. He is waylaid by Sam, a rascally fairground entertainer, and introduced to the delights of the amazing Fly Swatter Festival. A tribe of Vikings feel flustered because in every raid they find their target locations devoid of people. Cryptograf, an advisor to Viking chief Timandahaf, says that the enemies always disappear because "Fear gives them wings". Timandahaf excitedly concludes that they must find a "Champion of Fear", who can teach them to be great cowards so they can fly, making them invincible. The chief says he'll give anything to whoever can bring him this Champion of Fear. Cryptograf hatches a secret plan to seize power and tells the chief they'll find the Champion of Fear in Gaul.

Au cœur d'une grande forêt, le fils Courge grandit en petit sauvage aux côtés de son père, un colosse bourru et tyrannique qui le maintient dans l'ignorance du monde des hommes. Les seuls amis du fils Courge sont des fantômes muets (dont celui de sa mère) ayant pris forme animale, qui communiquent avec lui par signes. Un jour, alors qu'il cherche à soigner son père blessé et inconscient, le jeune garçon s'aventure hors de la forêt, sur les conseils d'un des fantômes, et découvre un village. Il y fait la rencontre de Manon, la fille du docteur qui a accepté de soigner son père. Avec elle, il découvre l'existence d'un sentiment inconnu pour lui : l'amour. Il se lance alors à la recherche de celui de son père. Une fois Courge rétabli, il retourne vivre dans la forêt avec son fils. Ce dernier finit par apprendre ce qui est arrivé : Autrefois, le père Ronce s'opposait à l'amour de sa fille pour Courge. En pourchassant les amants, il est mort dans l'incendie qu'il avait lui-même provoqué. Courge et son amante ont fui dans la forêt où cette dernière est morte en accouchant de son fils. Fou de chagrin, Courge n'a jamais pu aimer l'enfant.

The story is based on the traditional Chinese folklore about a boy named Chenxiang. His mother, Sanshengmu, was a goddess and his father, Liu Yanchang, was a mortal. Since their marriage was forbidden, his maternal uncle, Erlang Shen, who was a god, punishes them by killing Liu Yanchang.
