Le Cercle Rouge ([lə sɛʁkl ʁuʒ], The Red Circle) is a 1970 crime film set in Paris, France. It was directed by Jean-Pierre Melville and stars Alain Delon, Andre Bourvil, Gian Maria Volonté and Yves Montand. It is known for its climactic heist sequence which is about half an hour in length and without any dialogue.
The film's title means "The Red Circle" and refers to the film's epigraph which translates as
Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, drew a circle with a piece of red chalk and said: "When men, even unknowingly, are to meet one day, whatever may befall each, whatever the diverging paths, on the said day, they will inevitably come together in the red circle."
In fact, the Buddha said no such thing; Melville made it up just as he did with the epigraph in Le Samouraï.
Synopsis
Après cinq ans d'emprisonnement dans un établissement pénitentiaire de Marseille, Corey (Alain Delon) est sur le point d'être libéré. La veille de sa sortie, le gardien-chef de la prison lui propose une affaire. Sitôt libre, Corey rend visite à son ancien comparse, un nommé Rico, caïd enrichi, devenu amant de sa petite amie. Corey contraint le malfrat à lui remettre une somme d'argent liquide importante. Amer, ce dernier dépêche deux sbires aux trousses de Corey. Dans une salle de billard, Corey saisit une queue et, à l'aide d'une craie rouge, trace avec son procédé (l'embout de la queue qui sert à frapper les boules) un cercle qu'il remplit ensuite, avant de disperser les boules. Les hommes de Rico le rejoignent et l'entretien se termine dans le sang. Mais Corey en repart indemne. Il achète une voiture d'occasion remarquée dans la vitrine d'un revendeur automobile et entreprend de regagner son domicile du 16e arrondissement de Paris.Actors

Four men rob a bank in Saint-Jean-de-Monts. A detective (Delon) tries to catch the team responsible for the lethal bank robbery, foil a drug smuggling operation and hold on to his girlfriend (Deneuve), whom he shares with a nightclub owner (Crenna), his friend and a prime suspect in the robbery. The notoriety and shared knowledge between the players intensifies into the film, similar to a Le Carre adaptation with the protagonists confronting each other at the climax of the story. The short stories and anecdotes that lead viewers to the conclusion, become a melange of real time actions scenes and non verbal interactions that hint at spy mystery, while remaining open to the viewer's interpretation. In one scene, all three protagonists can be seen at a bar, sharing a drink and glancing at each other as strangers, each one coy to reveal his or her real identity. Hence Melville's license to play with characters and plots to leave space for the film genre to shine through.

Roch Siffredi, chef de gang très en vue à Marseille, vient d'ouvrir un établissement somptueux qui lui promettrait des jours heureux dans cette ville, s'il ne venait d'enterrer son ami et associé François Capella à la fin du premier Borsalino. Il jure de le venger. Il apprend qu'un certain Giovanni Volpone, récemment arrivé à Marseille, est à l'origine du meurtre. Le commissaire Fanti passe voir Siffredi après la mort de Capella. Il constate la réussite du truand et admire le nouvel établissement : il a une certaine estime pour Roch, mais quand des évènements agitent le milieu, sa politique est de laisser les truands s'entretuer ! Il informe cependant Siffredi que Volpone est un homme dangereux : le gangster italien, semble avoir des ambitions sur la ville de Marseille; il a des moyens importants tant en hommes qu'en finance et des soutiens politiques efficaces dans la période qui précède la guerre. Volpone est en relation avec le fascisme international. Il a le projet de « nettoyer » la ville et d'en faire une base expérimentale pour préparer une ère nouvelle.
