Jong-goo, policier dans la petite ville de Gok-seong, est confronté à des meurtres très violents commis par des personnes qui, après une soudaine éruption cutanée, sont soudainement prises de démence avant de devenir catatoniques. Au fil de ses investigations, la rumeur le conduit à soupçonner un Japonais qui vit isolé dans la forêt. Pour l'interroger, il fait appel à un diacre parlant japonais et, avec un collègue, ils fouillent sa cabane en son absence. L'autre policier trouve des photos des villageois infectés et assassinés et certaines de leurs affaires mais est trop choqué pour dire quoi que ce soit aux autres. Le chien de garde de l'étranger attaque le diacre et Jong-goo. Le Japonais arrive et apaise le chien, et les trois autres partent.

Ugetsu is set in villages which line the shore of Lake Biwa in Ōmi Province in the late 16th century. It revolves around two peasant couples – Genjurō and Miyagi, Tōbei and Ohama – who are uprooted as Shibata Katsuie's army sweeps through their farming village, Nakanogō. Genjurō, a potter, takes his wares to nearby Ōmizo. He is accompanied by Tōbei, who dreams of becoming a samurai. A respected sage tells Miyagi to warn her husband about seeking profit in time of upheaval, and to prepare for a probable attack on the village. Genjurō arrives with his profits, but she asks him to stop. Genjurō nevertheless works long hours to finish his pottery. That night Nakanogō is attacked by soldiers, and the four main characters hide out in the woods.

The film begins with the Potter family moving into a new apartment complex in San Francisco. While unpacking, their young daughter Wendy is attacked by a grotesque little creature, who had long ago been transformed from a powerful wizard into a troll. Using a magic crystal green ring, it captures Wendy and possesses her form. After meeting the other eccentric tenants, the family notices Wendy's unusual behavior (roaring, biting, tossing people across rooms, punching people in the groin), but they attribute her behavior to the stress of the move. The only one that notices something is terribly wrong is Wendy's brother, Harry Potter Jr.

The film is set in Bailey Downs, a suburb where a rash of dog killings has been occurring. Brigitte and Ginger Fitzgerald are teenage sisters who harbor a fascination with death and, as children, formed a pact to die together.
