The Best Job in the World (French: Le Plus Beau Métier du monde) is a 1996 French drama film directed by Gérard Lauzier. It was entered into the 20th Moscow International Film Festival.
Synopsis
Laurent Monier est professeur agrégé d'histoire au lycée Fénelon d'Annecy. Le jour de ses 40 ans, il rentre dans son appartement plongé dans le noir ; il ignore que sa femme, ses enfants, sa belle-mère et ses amis sont en réalité dissimulés dans l'obscurité, n'attendant que le bon moment pour lui faire une surprise. Mais avant que son épouse n'ait pu rallumer la lumière, Monier décroche le téléphone et se croyant seul, bavarde avec l'appelant que l'on devine être sa maîtresse. Hélène, sa femme, rallume alors la lumière et s'enfuit dans sa chambre, alors même que leur jeune fils enclenche innocemment une cassette audio diffusant une chanson de joyeux anniversaire. Monier découvre le désastre sous l'œil narquois de son inénarrable belle-mère et de ses amis, qui ne savent plus où se mettre. Le couple divorce. Hélène étant nommée dans un lycée parisien, Laurent demande également sa mutation afin de rester près de ses enfants. Il se retrouve au collège Serge-Gainsbourg à Saint-Denis, établissement dit « sensible ». Dans ce collège, on l'affecte à la classe réputée la plus dissipée et indisciplinée de l'établissement, la 4e Techno. L'appartement de fonction qui lui est alloué, auparavant occupé par un professeur dépressif, se trouve dans la Cité des Mûriers, considérée comme la plus dure et violente des environs.Actors

The story introduces André (Gérard Depardieu), a Frenchman who is divorced from his wife. François Pignon, an unassuming divorced man with a teenage son who ignores him, lives a quiet and unremarkable life. When he learns he will be fired from his job as an accountant in a rubber factory, he contemplates suicide, but his new neighbor Jean-Pierre Belone, a former industrial psychologist, dissuades him from jumping from his balcony and suggests a way to keep his position. Belone proposes that Pignon start a rumor he is homosexual by inserting his image in sexually provocative snapshots of a gay couple in a bar and anonymously mailing them to his boss, Mr. Kopel. The factory's primary product is condoms, so the gay community's support is essential, and Kopel will have to keep Pignon on the payroll to avoid charges of anti-homosexual bigotry.

Germain is a 45-year-old illiterate handyman who has not had much luck in his life so far. He was bullied at school, both by the teacher and the other pupils because he was a slow reader. Raoul (Gérard Depardieu) and his wife Solange (Carole Laure) are eating in a restaurant when Raoul expresses concern with Solange's apparent depression, as she eats little, suffers migraines and insomnia and also sometimes faints. He finds another man in the room, Stéphane (Patrick Dewaere), to be her lover and hopefully enliven her again. Stéphane is puzzled by Raoul's plan but gives in to his desperate appeals for help. Jean-Claude (25) and Pierrot (23) are young sociopathic men who travel around France, committing petty crimes and running from the law. After they get in trouble with a hairdresser in Valence for stealing his car, they grab his pistol and kidnap his assistant Marie-Ange, an apathetic girl. Then, the four consider founding a crime family but at their first crime, an attempted robbery, Jacques commits a revenge killing and the others flee. While on the run, they meet a family having a picnic near Col d'Izoard and the delinquent teenage daughter Jacqueline wants to join them. They take Jacqueline and on learning that she is still a virgin, they decide to deflower her. After dropping Jacqueline, the three ride away aimlessly.
