Sentimental Destinies (French: Les Destinées sentimentales) is a 2000 French drama film directed by Olivier Assayas. It was entered into the 2000 Cannes Film Festival.

Synopsis

Based on the novel of the same name by Jacques Chardonne, the film is set in the early 20th century. The story covers thirty years in the life of Jean, a Protestant minister who leaves his wife (Isabelle Huppert) for Pauline (Emmanuelle Béart), the niece of one of his parishioners. Abandoning his career in the church, he sets up home with her in Switzerland. Following the death of an uncle he moves to Limoges, where he takes over the running of the family porcelain factory.

Diane de Monx (Nielsen) is an executive trying to negotiate a deal to acquire the rights to the productions of a Japanese anime studio, which will soon include three-dimensional hentai, for the Volf Corporation. To facilitate the acquisition, she eliminates her superior, Karen (Dominique Reymond), and assumes control of her portfolio, her business partner Hervé (Berling), and her assistant Elise (Sevigny). Elise, however, despises Diane and works to frustrate her negotiations at every opportunity. Diane and Hervé travel to Japan to close the deal, and they enjoy a sexual flirtation which is unfulfilled at that time and seem to grow to like one another.

Refers to miniseries version. In 16th Century London, a pauper called Tom Canty reads to a group a children but is attacked and threatened by his cruel father John Canty to steal five shillings by suppertime or get beaten. Tom goes into the city square and steals a purse from a rich man, but drops it after bumping into another man. Thinking that Tom still has the purse, the rich man and other men chase Tom through the streets of London. Tom escapes by climbing up a wall and through a window, where he falls into a palace garden in front of King Henry VIII, who sets the guards on him. However, Tom outruns them by going to the roof of the castle and hiding in a chimney. In the grounds, Henry VIII orders for The Duke of Norfolk to be arrested during the masked ball that evening.
