Synopsis
Jack Baker, jeune et brillant universitaire américain, débarque à Tahiti pour écrire une énième biographie de Paul Gauguin. Mais ses bonnes résolutions ne tardent pas à être mises à mal par les charmes de ce lieu enchanteur. Sans compter l'intrusion dans son existence d'un singulier personnage, le malicieux et exaspérant Cohn, escroc, voleur et mythomane, bien connu - pour leur malheur - des habitants de l'île. Ryckmans, le chef de la police locale, semble curieusement fermer les yeux sur les multiples frasques et beuveries de ce calamiteux parasite, appointé, par ailleurs, par un voyagiste pour jouer les descendants de Gauguin. Et bien qu'il ne soit aucunement dupe des impostures de Cohn, Baker éprouve bientôt de la fascination pour ce pitre arrogant et cynique, qui ne le lâche plus d'une semelle.Actors

Henri Serin (Jean-Pierre Marielle) is a middle-aged travelling umbrella salesman from Saumur who lives a sexless and unhappy married life with his puritan wife (Gisèle Grimm) and two children. Painting is the only true passion of Henri but he also has an affection for female buttocks. One night, on the roads of Brittany he hits a boar with his car. Émile (Bernard Fresson), a rude and carefree painter who lives in a cottage near Riec-sur-Belon meets Henri and invites him to stay at his house while the car is being fixed. Henri falls in love with Émile's Canadian live-in girlfriend Angela (Dolores McDonough) who draws Henri's attention with her beautiful buttocks. Henri and Angela leave Émile after a violent confrontation and move to Pont-Aven, 'the city of painters'. Angela encourages Henri to continue his life as a painter and he sees this as an opportunity to leave his earlier life behind. However, Angela soon dumps him for Émile and Henri becomes a drunkard, butt of jokes in the town, and a painter unable to sell a single painting. Marie (Jeanne Goupil), the teenage maid working at the pension Henri stays, is apparently in love with him but he seems to neglect her because his mind is too occupied with Angela. However, at a kermesse where the two sing Kenavo by Théodore Botrel, Henri faces his true feelings for Marie. He finds pure love and a pair of beautiful buttocks in her and decides to make a new start in his life. Eventually, Henri and Marie begin to live together and are seen happily selling galettes and toffee apples on a Névez beach.

Sous son allure bonasse d'amoureux des fleurs et de peintre naïf, le père Tulipe est un faux-monnayeur qui fabrique seulement des petites coupures pour améliorer son ordinaire. A somewhat artificial looking young dandy goes to an ornate dance hall, where he finds a young woman to be his dance partner. When he faints from the exertion, a doctor is called. He discovers that the dandy is in fact an old man wearing a mask to hide his aged appearance. The doctor takes the old man home to his patient wife. She explains that her husband Ambroise used to attract the ladies who frequented the hairdresser salon where he worked, but in the space of two years, he lost his looks. He goes out in disguise in an attempt to recapture his youth.

Kitano plays Machisu, who is born into a wealthy family, but loses both his parents as a child. When his father (Akira Nakao) commits suicide after the collapse of his business, Machisu's stepmother (Mariko Tsutsui) sends him to live with an aunt and uncle who mistreat him and finally send him to an orphanage. They get married and have a daughter. As he grows older, Mashisu's obsession with contemporary art controls his whole life, leaving him insensitive of everything around him, including the death of his own daughter (Eri Tokunaga) and his wife's desertion. He tries to please the art critics, remaining penniless. He is caught up in a fire and almost dies. Losing all his previous works, he is left with a single half-burnt soda can, which he assesses at 200,000 yen and tries to sell. This ends up kicked carelessly away when his wife picks him up from the street. They walk away together, seemingly finally rid of his artistic obsession.
