Synopsis
Deux belges, Noël Godin et Jan Bucquoy, après une vie sentimentale déjantée, une carrière artistique tumultueuse, repartent à l'assaut de la société du spectacle, incarnée par le Festival de Cannes 2004. Cet univers, où l'image manipule la substance, sera le théâtre du conflit des sentiments entre les générations, au travers de rencontres hétéroclites, parfois douces-amères, mais toujours touchantes. Dans ce documentaire romancé, la quête presque effrénée d'amour et de jeunesse traduit un refus du temps qui passe, et de la fin qu'il annonce. Le film mélange, outre la référence aux vacances dans le titre du film, le burlesque de Les Vacances de monsieur Hulot et l'histoire du voyage au festival de cinéma de Cannes dans Les Vacances de Mr.Actors

Enfance : le film parle au début de la vie de famille flamande mais après il parle du petit Jan en ville de province et le Jan adolescent à l'encontre d'aventures sexuelles : il est témoin à l'école des tracasseries de son premier amour sale culotte. Sa tante Marta l'emmène voir le western Johnny Guitare (1954) avec Joan Crawford qui restera pour lui l'emblème de la femme parfaite. Johnny Guitare est une allusion à François Truffaut. Il ne sera tenté ni par le nationalisme flamand, ni par l'homosexualité: ceci est expliqué dans la scène au camping dans les champs de Dixmude avec le petit film de Laurel et Hardy Cavale en série. Là il refusera les attouchements d'un copain plus âgé, avec la tour d'Yser à l'arrière plan qui fait figure de symbole du Flamingantisme. Il fait sa première conquête amoureuse lors d'un bal de village pendant lequel Will Tura chante : Ik ben zo eenzaam zonder jou (Je me sens si seul sans toi).

Serge Pilardosse (Depardieu), retires from the job he has held for many years, as a slaughterhouse worker in Lyon. The film begins with the contorted body of the woman, covered in frost. From this image, an unseen and unheard interviewer (the voice of Varda herself) puts the camera on the last men to see her and the ones who found her. The action then flashes back to the woman, Mona (Sandrine Bonnaire) walking along the roadside, hiding from the police and trying to get a ride. Along her journey she meets and takes up with other vagabonds such as herself as well as a Tunisian vineyard worker, a family of goat farmers, a professor researching trees, and a maid who envies what she perceives to be a beautiful and passionate lifestyle. Mona explains to one of her temporary companions that at one time she had an office job in Paris and did very well for herself, but she became unsettled with the way she was living – choosing instead to wander the country free from any responsibility, picking up what she could to survive as she goes. Throughout the film, Mona's condition seems to become progressively worse until she finally falls where we first saw her, frozen and entrenched in her misery in a ditch.

The Great Leslie (Tony Curtis) and Professor Fate (Jack Lemmon) are competing daredevils at the turn of the 20th century. Leslie is the classic hero – always dressed in white, handsome, ever-courteous, enormously talented and successful. Leslie's nemesis, Fate, is the traditional melodramatic villain – usually dressed in black, sporting a black moustache and top hat, glowering at most everyone, maniacal evil laugh, grandiose plans to thwart the hero, and dogged by failure. Leslie proposes an automobile race from New York to Paris, to prove the ability of a new car named after him. Fate builds his own race vehicle, the Hannibal Twin-8, complete with hidden devices of sabotage. Others enter cars in the race, including New York City's most prominent newspaper. Driving the newspaper's car is beautiful photojournalist Maggie DuBois (Natalie Wood), a vocal suffragette.

Shortly after the events of the previous film, Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly), a former girlfriend and accomplice of serial killer Charles Lee Ray (voice of Brad Dourif), acquires the remains of Chucky from a police evidence locker after bribing and then murdering a police officer with access to the locker. Assuming that Ray's soul still inhabits the doll, Tiffany takes it back to her place. She crudely stitches Chucky back together and reenacts the voodoo ritual which instilled Ray inside the doll ten years ago.
