Lone Star is a 1952 Western film starring Clark Gable, Ava Gardner, Broderick Crawford, Ed Begley, and Lionel Barrymore (in his final role) as President Andrew Jackson. The film also marks the first (uncredited) screen appearance by then-thirteen-year-old George Hamilton, playing beside Barrymore in the role of Jackson's servant.

The movie is considered both a Western and a romance, set in Texas shortly before statehood.

Synopsis

Devereaux Burke gets a personal request from former President Andrew Jackson to help keep Texas from entering into annexation with Mexico. The movement is gaining favor because it is mistakenly believed that Texas pioneer Sam Houston supports it.

"Big John" McMasters (Clark Gable) and "Square John" Sand (Spencer Tracy) are two down-on-their-luck oil wildcatters who join forces. Without enough money, they steal drilling equipment from a skeptical Luther Aldrich (Frank Morgan). Bob Corey (Gordon MacRae) is an American soldier badly wounded at the end of World War II, and undergoing a number of surgical operations on his spine at a military hospital in California. He is tended by a nurse, Julie Benson (Virginia Mayo), and they have fallen in love. Corey's military pal, Steve Connolly (Edmond O'Brien), arrives in early November to discuss plans for the ranch they plan to purchase and operate together once Corey is out of the hospital. The two men pool their G.I. benefits (totaling $40,000) to do so. Corey's final surgery is in mid-December, but Connolly does not appear at the hospital afterward to see his friend. By Christmas, Corey is still in recovery but Connolly still remains absent. One night, as Corey lies semi-conscious in bed after being administered a sleeping drug, a woman with an foreign accent (Viveca Lindfors) appears at his bedside. She says Connolly has been in a horrible accident; his spine is shattered and he wants to die, but she has refused to help him commit suicide. The woman asks Corey what to do, and he advises her to do nothing to harm Steve, and just to wait. Corey slips into unconsciousness, and the woman disappears.

Au XVI siècle, on assiste aux exploits et aux amours du jeune et fougueux Miguel de Cervantes, futur auteur de Don Quichotte. De ses démêlés avec le cardinal Giulio Acquaviva et l’Ottoman Hassan Bey, en passant par son alliance avec le pape Pie IV, par ses amours contrariées avec la belle courtisane romaine Giulia, par son combat auprès de Philippe II d’Espagne contre les Maures, par sa bravoure à la bataille navale de Lépante où il perd l’usage de son bras gauche, mais gagne une pension, jusqu’à sa capture en même temps que son frère Rodrigo par des pirates et leur emprisonnement à Alger par Hassan Bey. Miguel ayant acquis une renommée du fait de ses exploits guerriers, Hassan Bey monnaye la libération des deux frères contre rançon à leur famille, mais également au roi d’Espagne. Durant cette négociation, Hassan Bey réduit les deux frères en esclavage, mais Miguel fomente une rébellion, ce qui lui vaut d’être soumis à la torture puis condamné à mort. Heureusement, la rançon est payée juste avant son exécution et Hassan Bey rend leur liberté aux frères Cervantes qui peuvent enfin regagner leur pays.
