Directed by French director Maurice Tourneur in the United States, the film starred Madge Bellamy and John Bowers.
This is one of many film adaptations of the novel. It was filmed twice before in 1912 in England for Clarendon, and in 1915 for the American Biograph Company. Other later adaptations include 1934 and 1951 films, and 1990 and 2001 television movies.
Synopsis
Dans le Devon au XVII siècle. Lorna est une jeune fille de bonne noblesse qui rencontre un jeune paysan, John Ridd, peu avant d'être kidnappée par les Doone, une bande de bandits redoutables menée par Sir Ensor. Sa présence attise les convoitises, mais Sir Ensor la protège. Des années plus tard, un membre de la bande, Carver, demande à Lorna de devenir sa femme. Sir Ensor, miné par la maladie, est impuissant pour faire barrage à ce mariage, dont Lorna ne veut pas, mais John, qui a retrouvé Lorna par hasard, la sauve de ce mauvais pas.Actors

Henri Santados (Lon Chaney) is sculptor living in Paris. He's in love with his model, Bebe Larvache (Mildred Manning), who cares nothing for him. She meets a wealthy American, Dennis O'Keefe (John Gilbert), and they grow affectionate. A jealous Santados teams up with Father Marionette (Jack F. MacDonald), a wax museum owner, to get rid of O'Keefe. Meanwhile, O'Keefe's father (Hardee Kirkland), who objects to the relationship, convinces Larvache to leave O'Keefe for his own good. She requests at have one final night with Dennis at the Mardi Gras festival. O'Keefe goes to pick Larvache up at the studio, but Santados tricks her into a compromising position, which makes O'Keefe think she's cheating. Heartbroken, he leaves, and is captured by Marionette, who tortures him in the wax museum. Marionette calls Santados, and Larvache hears O'Keefe over the phone. Dan Malloy est un hors-la-loi qui n'arrive pas à rentrer dans le droit chemin, malgré son amour pour une jeune femme qu'il vient de rencontrer juste après sa dernière attaque de train. Le shérif, lui-même amoureux de la belle, met au point un piège dans lequel se retrouve pris Dan. Condamné à dix ans de prison, Dan s'ennuie et utilise ses dons en dessin pour tracer un portrait du Christ sur le mur de sa cellule. Le lendemain, un meurtrier qui est conduit à la potence passe devant le dessin et reçoit miraculeusement une vision du Christ. Dan, en voyant ce miracle, se sent un instrument dans les mains de Dieu. Il commence à lire la Bible. Des artistes en visite pour voir ce portrait admirent la qualité de son travail. Une demande de pardon arrive finalement sur le bureau du gouverneur et peu après l'ancien bandit est libre de sortir. Alors qu'il veut se venger du shérif qui l'a fait emprisonner, une tempête éclate et un éclair frappe le shérif. Dan retrouve la femme qui l'aime, enfin digne de cet amour.

Based upon a summary in a film publication, Joan Grainger (Hampton) is about to be "sent up" to prison after being falsely accused of stealing when she is kidnapped by Bennett Barton (McDonald), mastermind of a band of crooks of which Simpson (Singleton) is a member. Joan accepts Bennett's assistance when he sends her to Europe and later joins her. They live in luxury when she meets John Warren (Woodward), a wealthy American. Joan receives her first jar of suspicion when Bennett introduces her to John as being Bennett's daughter. Bennett later tells her the plan is for her to marry John so that they will have access to the money. The girl rebels but Bennett threatens to send her back to prison or, still worse, expose her to John, with whom she has now fallen in love. The entire party return to the United States where Bennett forces Joan to accept John's proposal of marriage. In the meantime some members of Bennett's gang have double-crossed him and tell Joan of the original theft frame-up. A signed confession is secured from the girl that did the framing. In the effort to secure the confession, Bennett is killed by Simpson, who had been after the "goods" on Bennett. John is willing to have Joan despite all of this and they are happy.

In 1757, in the midst of the French and Indian War, three French divisions and their Huron Indian allies are advancing on Fort William Henry, a British stronghold south of Lake George in the colony of New York. Chingachgook (Theodore Lorch) sends his son Uncas (Roscoe), the last living warrior of the Mohican tribe, to warn the fort's commander, Colonel Munro (James Gordon), of the imminent danger. As described in a film magazine, American engineer Richmond Harvey is working for the betterment of Exile, a Portuguese colony. Vincento Perez, as chief justice, holds the power of life and death over thousands of Arabs. Perez desires to obtain a letter he has written Harvey, which, if published, would mean the ruin of Perez. He sends his wife Claudia to Harvey's quarters, where she intimates that she is in love with him. They have a sumptuous dinner and sit far into the night talking. Finally she retires, handing Harvey the key to her room. He tells her that he will not take advantage of the situation, and in the morning hands her the letter. She gives it to her husband and leaves him. The Arabs arise against Perez and kill him. Harvey saves Claudia's life by snatching her from a veranda surrounded by angry Arabs and they ride off together.
