It depicts an evening ball in which a rumor spreads among the guests that one among them has contracted AIDS. The film was meant to raise awareness about AIDS and dispel common misconceptions regarding its contagiousness. It features an all-star cast of Hong Kong cinema actors and Cantopop singers. The music is mostly arranged from Classical works such as Für Elise and Carmen with added or changed lyrics.

Ye Xianglun est un étudiant en musique avec une spécialisation piano. Il vient d’être transféré d’une école secondaire dans une école célèbre, réputée pour ses élèves doués en musique et particulièrement au piano. Le premier jour dans l'école, comme il erre à travers le bâtiment réservé aux cours de piano, il entend une mélodie mystérieuse jouée dans une des salles. En suivant le son, il trouve Lu Xiaoyu, une autre remarquable joueuse de piano. Quand il lui pose des questions sur la chanson qu’elle jouait, elle lui dit que c’est un secret qui ne peut être dit. Les deux musiciens développent une relation qui est assombrie de mystère. Lorsque Xianglun apprend à Xiaoyu que le bâtiment des cours de piano va être démoli le jour de la remise des diplômes, elle lui enseigne la musique secrète, mais lui demande en échange de ne pas la jouer sur le piano le plus ancien du bâtiment.

Namson Lau (Andy Lau) est professeur de danse de salon. Un jour, lors d'un bal organisé par l'aristocrate Tina Cheung (Anita Mui), Namson exécute une danse avec Tina devant Kam qui fait partie du public. Enchantée par la prestation de danse de Namson, elle décide de s'inscrire à ses cours, dans l'espoir de réaliser son rêve de danser aussi bien avec lui un jour. Pendant ce temps, Jimmy (Edison Chen), le frère cadet de Tina, confie également à Namson la tâche d'initier sa sœur au tango. Kam travaille dur à temps partiel pour payer ses cours de danse, tandis que Namson travaille à la réalisation de son rêve d'acheter son studio de danse dans Central et de participer au Festival de danse de Blackpool en Angleterre. De ce fait, il néglige les progrès de ses élèves et ne se soucie plus que de gagner de l’argent avec eux, comme à l’époque où il avait rencontré Tina au bal et où son but avait été de la persuader de prendre des leçons de danse avec lui.

Grunge rocker Blake escapes rehab and walks home through a long forest, also swimming through a lake then lighting a fire for the night. The next day, he gets home and changes his clothes. He walks around in the house with a shotgun pointing it at his sleeping roommates Scott, Luke, Asia, and Nicole. He is greeted by Yellow Pages representative Thadeus A Thomas who talks to him about placing an ad in the upcoming book. He receives a phone call from his record company telling him that he and his band (Which also has Scott and Luke) have to do another tour and they have to make those dates. He goes upstairs and falls asleep on the floor in one of the rooms. Asia now waking up finds him asleep and two boys at the door. Scott and Luke answer the door and the two boys are there to talk to them about their church down the street. Blake changes into different clothes and leaves the house going to the shed outside as the christian boys leave.

The film begins in Vienna in the year 1890 and we find that Walter Pidgeon, Alexander Gray and Bert Roach, who are three close friends, are going to join the Austrian army. Eventually, Pidgeon become a lieutenant and as a superior officer he is forced to distance himself from his two former friends. Gray and Pidgeon end up falling in love with a poor girl, played by Vivienne Segal, who is the daughter of a cobbler. Although Segal truly loves Gray, she chooses to marry Pidgeon because of his wealth and position, believing that money and the social mobility that goes with it will bring her happiness. Gray is heartbroken and travels to the United States with his friend Roach. Gray gets a job playing violin in an orchestra but struggles to support his wife and child. In the course of time, Segal travels to the United States and meets Gray and their love is rekindled. Gray learns of Segal's unhappy marriage and they plan to make a new life together. Segal, however, discovers that Gray is married and has a child. Feeling sorry for Gray's son, she sacrifices her happiness and returns to Pidgeon, her husband. The film now progresses forty years in time to the year 1930. Segal is now a grandmother and she is planning for her granddaughter, played by Alice Day, to marry a wealthy man since the family's fortunes are now on the wane. Day, however, falls in love with a composer, who happens to be the grandson of Gray. Segal immediately recalls her romance with Gray and of the mistake she once made. She consents to her granddaughters marriage and reminiscences about the man she really loves, who is now dead. One day after the wedding, while at the park, Segal sees Gray and her spirit walks off with him and leaves her body. The film ends as she is finally reunited with her long lost love.
