The film relates the story of Gitai's father, Munio Weinraub (1909-1970), an eminent Israeli architect. Weinraub was a student at the Bauhaus design and architecture school in the city of Dessau when Hitler closed the school in 1933. In May 1933, Weinraub was accused of "treason against the German people", sent to prison and later expelled from Germany. The film traces Munio's route from Poland to Germany, from Switzerland to Palestine.
Gitai has written that his film "is a voyage searching for the relationships between a father and his son, architecture and movies, the history of a journey and intimate memories. Like in my movie Carmel, based on my mother, Efratia's, letters, there is no chronological sequence of events. It is not a reconstituted biography, but a mosaic. The story comes together piece by piece, as a poetical association of pictures, faces, voyages, real architecture and snippets of fiction.
Synopsis
Le film entrelace événements historiques et souvenirs intimes. J’observe la façon dont l’architecture représente les transformations de la société et ceux qui donnent forme à cette architecture. Nous suivons le parcours de Munio, mon père, né en 1909 en Silésie, en Pologne, fils d’un métayer d’un junker prussien. A l’âge de 18 ans, Munio part à Berlin et à Dessau pour aller rencontrer Walter Gropius, Kandinsky et Paul Klee au Bauhaus. En 1933, le Bauhaus est fermé par les nazis, qui accusent Munio de trahison envers le peuple allemand. Munio est emprisonné, puis expulsé à Bâle. Il part pour la Palestine. A son arrivée à Haïfa, il entame une carrière d’architecte et il adapte les principes européens modernistes au Moyen Orient.Actors

Instead of written credits at the beginning of the film, Gitai reads out the credits, introduces himself to the viewer, and explains that Alila is based on the novel Returning Lost Love. The rest of the movie is made up of forty individual single shot scenes depicting the lives of several Israelis. The character's lives overlap and collide. Gabi, a bobbed haired sexpot, and her lover Hezi—who's older, balding and married—rent a room to have an affair, while Ezra, a pot bellied divorcee, supervises an illegal construction site next door. All this racket drives Schwartz, a Holocaust survivor, to a mental breakdown. Other characters include illegal immigrants, a teenage boy who's afraid to serve in the army, and a corrupt police officer. In each scene the camera moves through walls, over desks, and around rooms in order to keep focused on the character it's following, in moments of drama as well as in moments of mudane daily activity.
