Maids (Portuguese: Domésticas) is a 2001 Brazilian film directed by Fernando Meirelles and Nando Olival. It is based on the play of the same name by Renata Melo, and has received multiple awards and nominations.

Synopsis

Dans le Brésil d'aujourd'hui, il existe un autre pays, invisible, celui des domestiques, des livreurs, des chauffeurs et des voleurs à la petite semaine. Que ce soit Cida, Roxanne, Quitéria ou Raimunda, toutes caressent un rêve: un mariage, un meilleur mari ou une carrière de mannequin. Et toutes partagent le même enfer: la condition de domestique. Domésticas n'est pas un film sur les employées de maison, mais une comédie nourrie de leurs propres histoires, autour de ces petites choses de la vie qui donnent de l'espoir. De nouvelles rencontres, la musique et la solidarité créent des moments de joie. Il existe un pays à l'intérieur du Brésil: l'univers invisible des domestiques. Si ce Brésil ignoré disparaissait, les Brésiliens se retrouveraient dans le chaos le plus total.

Joe Saunders and his brother Fred arrive in London from Leybourne in Kent, and they go to the Elephant and Castle pub, the haunt of Tom Sayers, a leading boxer. While his brother, an aspiring boxer, is having a trial bout with Sayers, Joe Saunders is persuaded to sing a song to entertain the bar's customers. Initially reluctant, he soon gathers his confidence, and his performance is extremely well received by the audience. The impressed landlord offers him a pound a week and two free beers a night if he will perform on a regular basis. Saunders’s brother, meanwhile, is too ill from his past career as a miner to make a serious boxer and he returns home to Leybourne.

The musical starts with the busybody postman who reads everybody's mail, Hector (Walter Brennan), delivering mail to the Dana household and particularly to Cora (Helen Broderick), the maid who he is in love with. Professor Oliver Dana (Robert Benchley) is the head of the household. The oldest sister is Sylvia (Anne Gwynne), an actress, and the youngest is Nancy (Ann Gillis), who is a bit of a flirt and has all the boys fighting over her. The middle sister Jane (Deanna Durbin), the "nice girl", makes her entry singing the song "Perhaps" to the rabbits she takes care of. Her father is trying to write a book about diet and is testing it on rabbits. Don Webb (Robert Stack) is her boyfriend, an avid car buff.

Willie Mossop (John Mills) is a gifted but unappreciated bootmaker employed by the tyrannical Henry Horatio Hobson (Charles Laughton) in his moderately upmarket shop in 1880s Salford in Lancashire. Hard-drinking widower Hobson has three daughters. Maggie (Brenda De Banzie) and her younger sisters Alice (Daphne Anderson) and Vicky (Prunella Scales) have worked in their father's establishment without wages and are eager to be married and free of the shop. Alice has been seeing Albert Prosser (Richard Wattis), a young up-and-coming solicitor, while Vicky prefers Freddy Beenstock (Derek Blomfield), the son of a respectable corn merchant. Hobson does not object to losing Alice and Vicky, but Maggie is far too useful to part with. To his friends, he mocks the plain, severe Maggie as a spinster "a bit on the ripe side" at 30 years of age.

Like the play, the film is divided into three acts, all set in Suite 719 of New York City's Plaza Hotel.
