À la veille de Noël dans un établissement scolaire aux classes allant de la primaire au lycée. Le censeur reçoit au parloir les familles qui viennent chercher leurs enfants. Les élèves sont réunis dans la cour où les partants sont appelés par le garçon pour rejoindre leurs parents. Un élève, Villepontoux, qui veut sortir, devance l’appel. Il est orphelin de père et sa mère, qui s’est remariée, préfère le laisser en pension pour les fêtes. Il fait mine de s’en moquer mais le censeur le retrouve en pleurs dans le couloir et tente de le réconforter. Dans la cour, Villepontoux croise le garçon, qui renvoie un ballon qu'il a reçu dans les jambes et fait ainsi tomber le chapeau du surveillant. Celui-ci, croyant Villepontoux coupable, le met au piquet.

"Manon des sources" est un film français réalisé par Marcel Pagnol et sorti en 1952. Il inspira plus tard au réalisateur un roman en deux parties "L'eau des collines". Le film a deux parties, la deuxième a pour titre "Ugolin" --- Manon decide de se venger du Papet et d'Ugolin, responsables de la mort de son pere et détourne la source qui alimente le village en eau potable. Bientot les langues se délient et une terrible vérité apparait au Papet.

The story takes place in Marseille, where Marius, the son of a barkeeper César, has a romance with Fanny, neighbourhood girl of the fish sales man in the harbor. Marius dreams of sailing away one day and travel the seven seas. Fanny soon discovers she is pregnant of Marius, a shameful position in their community since she's a single mother with a father unable to secure the future of her and her child. She agrees with her mother and father's advice to marry a more prosperous salesman in the harbor, Honoré Panisse, who is 30 years older than she is. A few months after the marriage and the birth of the baby Marius returns and tries to win back Fanny.

The film takes place mostly in the waterfront bar of César, Marius's father. Marius works in the bar and his good friend since childhood, Fanny, works outside the bar selling cockles. Marius has a hidden desire to travel to exotic places with the ship crews that depart from the docks of Marseilles. This desire becomes exposed when a rich older man (Panisse) proposes to Fanny and Marius gets jealous. Marius' jealousy of Panisse is the first indication of the secret feelings that he has for her, but much to his surprise, the feelings are reciprocated by Fanny. She confesses that she loves Marius prompting him to reveal his plans of traveling the world to her, noting that being the wife of a man at sea is not a desirable life. After a few nights, it is discovered that they have slept together and Marius's father and Fanny's mother convince him to marry her. Marius becomes noticeably melancholy after proposing to Fanny until a few days later, the date of departure of a boat on which Marius was supposed to crew. Fanny, realizing that Marius is not truly happy being with her, decides to encourage him to leave. She helps distract his father while Marius sneaks onto the boat.

Il ne reste que trois habitants dans Aubignane, un village isolé perché sur un plateau de Haute-Provence. Un beau jour, le vieux forgeron Gaubert quitte à son tour le village pour rejoindre son fils, laissant derrière lui Panturle, un chasseur robuste et bourru, et la Mamèche, une vieille paysanne italienne restée au village après la mort de son mari, tué dans l'éboulement du puits qu'il creusait. D'après celle-ci, « si Panturle trouve une femme à marier, le village pourra renaître ». Elle part donc dans la plaine chercher l'élue et croise le chemin de Gédémus, le rémouleur itinérant, accompagné d'Arsule, une femme misérable qu'il a recueillie, mais qu'il traite comme une bête de somme. La Mamèche effraie Arsule pour l'attirer vers le village où elle finit par rencontrer Panturle. De ce couple qu'il forme avec Arsule, commence à renaître le village.

Honoré Panisse is dying, cheerfully, with friends, wife, and son at his side. He confesses to the priest in front of his friends; he insists that the doctor be truthful. But, he cannot bring himself to tell his son Césariot that his real father is Marius, the absent son of César, Césariot's godfather. Panisse leaves that to Fanny, the lad's mother. Dissembling that he's off to see a friend, Césariot then seeks Marius, now a mechanic in Toulon. Posing as a journalist, Césariot spends time with Marius and leaves believing tales he is a petty thief. Only after the truth comes out can Marius, Fanny, César, and Césariot step beyond the falsehoods, benign though they may be.

Jules est berger en Provence, qui vit en solitaire sur les hauts plateaux. Pour le sentiment, il s'est arrangé avec une jeune veuve qui habite dans la vallée, Fine, qui vient quelquefois passer la nuit avec lui quand il le désire. Il trouve, un jour au détour d'un sentier, un conteneur d'aviation qu'il prend pour une bombe, lequel, après avoir été percé par les chevrotines de son fusil, laisse apparaître près de deux mètres cubes de billets de banque. Angoissé, ne sachant que faire de tout cet argent, Jules offre aux habitants du village un grand banquet qui attire aussitôt les convoitises et les jalousies de chacun des convives. Après avoir semé le doute puis la terreur avec cet argent, Jules reçoit la visite de deux policiers qui lui expliquent, en raflant les dernières liasses, que ces faux billets étaient en réalité un piège de l'occupant voulant ruiner à la libération l'économie nationale. Le village va pouvoir recommencer une vie sans argent, peut-être plus près de l'amour.
