The duo are homeless vagrants, until Ollie receives word that he has inherited a fortune from a deceased uncle. He buys a sumptious mansion and makes Stan his butler. Pete Prindle, son of Proteus, a vegetarian health food manufacturer wishes to marry Christine Cadwalader. She agrees. However, Proteus considers his son lazy, with no contributions to the company and therefore undeserving of his father's wealth. His daughters have their pictures in the newspaper of them promoting the company products. Cassius refuses to consent to his daughter's hand since he believes Pete to be lazy as well, with no real stake in his father's company. Pete tries hard to get in the newspaper: He fakes a car accident, which gets an insignificant mention in the paper. He wins a boxing match, which turns out to be an illegally run ring which ends up being raided by police.

William Fielding (John Gilbert) lives in Shanghai with his young son David. Foo Chang (George Siegmann), a trader, loves the woman who cares for David and kills Fielding because he thinks she is the boy's mother. Li Clung (William V. Mong) takes David to his grandfather in San Francisco where he grows up and inherits the Fielding estate. Following David's marriage, Foo Chang tries to bribe David to help him bring a cargo of opium into the city, informing him that he is of mixed race. David takes his infant son, wife and Li Clung to Alaska. Li Clung kills Foo Chang and reveals the ethnicity of David's mother.
