Marupadiyum is a 1993 Indian Tamil-language film directed by Balu Mahendra starring Nizhalgal Ravi, Revathi, Rohini and Arvind Swamy. The movie is a remake of Mahesh Bhatt's 1982 Hindi movie Arth. It became successful both critically and commercially and was one among the top 5 Tamil films of the year.

Synopsis

Marupadiyum is an emotional and psychological drama that focuses on the central female protagonist, a wife caught up in marital discord played by Revathi and her life henceforth. Revathi is married to Ravi, a movie director who has an extra-marital affair with his star heroine, played by Rohini. Revathi discovers this intimacy between her husband and Rohini but is treated with indifference by her husband. Ravi moves on to get a divorce from Revathi. Revathi pleads with Ravi not to proceed with the divorce and asks Rohini to leave her husband but both disagree to do so. Arvind Swamy, a stranger, helps and befriends Revathi after she leaves her husband.

Laila (Kalki Koechelin) is a wheelchair bound teenager with cerebral palsy. She is a student at Delhi University and an aspiring writer who writes lyrics and creates electronic sounds for an indie band at the university. Laila falls for the lead singer of the college band and is heartbroken when she is rejected. But she soon overcomes this phase, when she gets a scholarship for a semester at New York University and moves there with her mother (Revathy). Living in Manhattan, she meets an attractive young man named Jared (William Moseley) in her creative writing class, who is assigned to help her in typing. She also meets the fiery young activist Khanum (Sayani Gupta), a blind girl of a Pakistani and Bangladeshi descent, whom she later falls in love with. As she embarks on a journey of sexual discovery, she figures out she is bisexual, as she still feels attracted to men like Jared in spite of being with Khanum. Laila's mother believing the two are like best friends and oblivious to the fact that Khanum is her daughter's lover, invites her to Delhi to spend the winter break with the family. It is during that time that Laila finally finds the courage to tell her mother about her sexuality and her actual relationship with Khanum, which her mother initially disapproves. After a short while Laila's mother falls sick and she learns that her mother had fourth stage colon cancer which has fallen into relapse after previous treatments. Later Laila and her mother patch up and come to terms with each other. After her mother dies Laila plays a recorded speech at her mother's funeral telling how much she loved her and how she was the only one who ever understood her. The story ends with Laila going on a date, with herself, signifying that she now has taken control of her life and doesn't need anyone else to love and care for her.

Kokila remains unaware of this incident even as Manga knows about Kokila's affair with Sathya. Sathya soon forgets the Manga episode and continues his romance with Kokila. One day while Kokila is away on a college tour Satya is informed by Manga that she is pregnant and hopes he will not let her down. Sathya suggests that Manga abort the child. Manga is shattered and leaves the Ranganathan house. Kokila comes back from the college tour and finds Sathya missing. He has vacated the room, says her mother and all attempts by Kokila to trace him remain futile. Kokila and Sathya meet each other accidentally, after few years in a village where she has gone as a doctor. She discovers Satya has married Manga and they have a young daughter whom they have named Kokila.
