Françoise est manucure dans un grand hôtel parisien, le "Paris Palace Hôtel". Frédéric Gari est arrêté pour contrebande de tabac. Il jure de se venger de celui qui l'a trahi quand il sortira de prison. Le même jour, Urbain Coindet, fermier et conseiller municipal de Cantagrel, trouve à son retour du marché sa femme Aurélie pendue. Les nouvelles vont vite et son beau-père fait courir le bruit que c'est Urbain l'assassin. Capucet, ivrogne, mais représentant de la loi, décide d'ouvrir une enquête que le curé arrête bien vite, car elle provoque une certaine effervescence dans le petit pays, d'autant plus qu'Urbain fait à nouveau la cour à une belle et jeune femme, Jeanne Gari, la sœur du contrebandier. Le village est partagé en deux clans, qui s'affrontent autant sur le plan local, que sur celui de la politique. Républicains et cléricaux basent leur campagne sur l'innocence ou la culpabilité d'Urbain. Grâce à Victor, on finira par découvrir que c'est Capucet le coupable involontaire de cette mésentente.

Aleksey Teodorovic Vlassov (Yul Brynner) is a high ranking KGB official who defects while in France. He has with him highly-classified information as part of a deal with Western intelligence for his arrival in the United States. The debriefing is held at Langley by DCI Allan Davies (Henry Fonda) and MI6 representative Philip Boyle (Dirk Bogarde). Vlassov hands off a list of enemy agents in Western Europe including a deep penetration into NATO. Davies wants to begin operations to arrest the agents; however, those on the list suddenly begin to die off. The CIA also has suspicions over the authenticity of Vlassov's claims. The CIA discovers that a defection photo of Vlassov was taken in the Soviet Union, not in Turkey, judging from the contours of Mt. Ararat in the background. Vlassov also fails a lie detector test after he angrily protests about sexual related questions asked by the CIA during the test.

The film's plot is based on the Kennedy assassination and subsequent investigation. In Paris, bloodthirsty jewel thief Roger Sartet (Alain Delon) escapes from custody with the help of the Manalese, a small-time but well-organised Sicilian Mafia clan led by patriarch Vittorio (Jean Gabin) and which includes his sons Aldo (Yves Lefebvre) and Sergio (Marc Porel) and son-in-law Luigi (Philippe Baronnet). While in prison, Sartet got to know an electrician (Christian de Tillière) who was involved in the setting up of an extensive security system at a diamond exhibition in Rome — the electrician returned home early, unannounced, caught his wife in bed with a lover and shot them. Unaccustomed to prison life, he made friends with Sartet and bit-by-bit supplied him with details of the exhibition.
