The film is set in the late 1970s in Wielice, People's Republic of Poland. Factory worker Filip Mosz (Jerzy Stuhr) is a nervous new father and a doting husband when he begins filming his daughter's first days with a newly acquired 8mm movie camera. The story begins at sea when the unnamed Skipper (Prochnow) of the sailboat Bella Donna reports a man overboard. The victim, Paul Pelikan, drowns before he can be rescued. People in the Bella Donna's home port of Gibraltar suspect that the Skipper deliberately pushed Paul overboard because he'd had an affair with the Skipper's wife Mona (Grażyna Szapołowska). Though nothing is proven, Mona believes the Skipper did in fact throw Paul overboard and leaves him. Heartbroken, the Skipper spends most of his time at the local bars getting drunk and swearing he will sail again, though the townspeople don't take his claim seriously.

Mara s'apprête à entrer dans une pharmacie. Au moment où elle tente d'ouvrir la porte, elle est arrêtée par une voix lui ordonnant de rebrousser chemin. Quelques instants plus tard, une employée ouvre la porte en criant qu’un homme vient d'être assassiné à l'intérieur. Mara aurait donc entendu la voix du tueur. Craignant que le meurtrier ne la pourchasse à son tour, le mari de cette dernière, Lukas, décide d'entreprendre sa propre enquête. Au fur et à mesure que les corps s'accumulent, Lukas constate un fait important. Il semblerait qu'à une certaine époque, les victimes du meurtrier aient toutes été membres d'un même jury.

Le cadavre d'une lycéenne de seize ans est retrouvé dans une rivière, dans une bâche en plastique transparent. Sam Lawton is on his way to a company retreat with his colleagues. While their bus crosses the North Bay Bridge, Sam has a premonition that the bridge will collapse, killing him and everyone on it, except for his ex-girlfriend Molly Harper, who he gets across the bridge safely. In a panic, he persuades Molly; his friends Nathan Sears and Peter Friedkin; Peter's girlfriend Candice Hooper; his boss Dennis Lapman; and co-workers Olivia Castle and Isaac Palmer to leave the bridge before it collapses, killing the remaining people on it. FBI agent Jim Block does not believe that Sam is responsible for the bridge collapse, but promises to keep his eye on him. At the memorial service, coroner William Bludworth mysteriously tells the survivors that "Death doesn't like to be cheated" and warns them to be careful. Believing this to be nonsense, they ignore his warnings and leave.
