Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack (Japanese: 機動戦士ガンダム 逆襲のシャア, Hepburn: Kidō Senshi Gandamu: Gyakushū no Shā) is a 1988 anime film set in Gundam's Universal Century timeline of Gundam, specifically U.C. 0093.

Making its theatrical debut on March 12, 1988, Char's Counterattack is the culmination of the original saga begun in Mobile Suit Gundam and continued through Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam and Mobile Suit Gundam Double Zeta, marking the final conflict of the fourteen-year rivalry between Char Aznable and Amuro Ray. Based on a novel by Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino, the movie supposedly marked the end of tensions between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon (until Gundam Unicorn was released in 2010).

In addition to being the first original Gundam theatrical release, Char's Counterattack was also the first Gundam production to make use of computer graphics during a five-second shot of the Sweetwater colony rotating in space. Char's Counterattack was released in America on DVD on August 20, 2002 and was shown on January 4, 2003 on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim.

Synopsis

Set in March UC 0093, the film features the return of main antagonist Char Aznable, who has emerged after five years in hiding to lead the Neo-Zeon once more in the fight for supremacy over the Earth Federation. Still determined to make humankind fully colonize in space, he mobilizes the Neo-Zeon to drop the asteroid 5th Luna on the Federation headquarters in Lhasa, Tibet. Under the guise of surrendering all Neo-Zeon military forces, he plans to drop the Axis asteroid base on Earth as well.

The film tells the story of the original discovery of Kerium (a fictional ore that serves as the main plot element of the TV series), and of how protagonist Bravestarr first opposed Tex Hex (an outlaw) and his master Stampede (an evil spirit) on the planet of New Texas. It also introduces his allies: J.B. McBride (a female judge), Thirty/Thirty (a belligerent cyborg stallion capable of assuming a bipedal stance), Deputy Fuzz (one of the indigenous people of New Texas), and the Shaman (Bravestarr's mentor). At the beginning of the story, the Shaman establishes himself on New Texas, to challenge Stampede, who earlier destroyed the shaman's nation in the attempt to absorb a metaphysical power owned by them: vaguely described, but identified as the source of the shaman's magic, and exploited by his people as a fuel-source. Soon afterward, Stampede acquires Tex-Hex and his sidekick Skuzz as assistants; and these, in turn, assemble a gang of robbers. Distraught by their depredations, the colonists of New Texas demand the installation of a 'Planetary Marshal' to police their colony; and protagonist 'Bravestarr' (the shaman's protege) is appointed, alongside Judge J.B. McBride. At their first encounter, Bravestarr humiliates Tex-Hex, who in turn separates him from the colony. In search of him, J.B. is attacked by highwaymen, but rescued by the 'Prairie People': a species of anthropoid marmot, native to New Texas, but hitherto ignored by the colonists. Soon, she befriends the Prairie People, and they accept her authority. Meanwhile, Bravestarr reconnects with the Shaman, and acquires a new partner in Thirty/Thirty. Ultimately, Stampede sends an army of undead monsters against the colony; but these are repelled by the joint efforts of Bravestarr, Thirty/Thirty, J.B., and the Prairie People, whereas Stampede and Tex-Hex are banished by the Shaman's energized staff. In conclusion, Bravestarr, Thirty/Thirty, J.B., and Bravestarr's deputy 'Fuzz' ride to Starr Peak (the Shaman's sanctuary) to converse with him in safety.

The plot loosely follows that of the original trilogy. Part 1 begins with the video recalling the start of Episode IV: A New Hope with an Imperial Star Destroyer pursuing the Tantive IV. Following the intrusion of Imperial Stormtroopers, Jar Jar Binks appears as a janitor wiping the floor of ship. At this point everyone freezes as Jar Jar passes by, and after leaving, the fighting resumes as the Rebel troopers are shot backward. Afterwards, Darth Vader walks in but slips on the wet floor; he lands on his back and is taken away on a stretcher while Jar Jar puts up a wet floor sign.
