Add to a movie listAn American Girl on the Home Front is the third movie in the American Girl film series, but is the first to premiere on the Disney Channel. The first two movies in the series were broadcast on The WB Television Network, but the series moved since it no longer fit in with its original network following the WB/UPN merger. It premiered on November 26, 2006, but was not tagged as a Disney Channel Original Movie. The film stars Maya Ritter in the title role, with Molly Ringwald, David Aaron Baker, Tory Green and Genevieve Farrell in their supporting roles.
The screenwriter, Anna Sandor, won the 2007 Humanitas Prize for the movie.

Synopsis
Based on the "Molly: An American Girl" book series, the film is set in 1943 to 1944 during World War II. 10-year-old Molly McIntire lives in the fictional town of Jefferson, Illinois with her parents and 3 siblings. Her father is an Army doctor. Molly is in the third grade at Willow Street School along with her best friends, Linda and Susan, and queen bee Allison. In the beginning, Molly, Linda, and Susan are at the movie theatre talking about how they think their teacher, Miss Campbell, is nice and pretty and they think her fiancee, Lieutenant Davies, is handsome as well. The girls then go to an ice cream parlor and are disappointed that they are out of ice cream, but they decide to go with cherry coke instead. As Molly's 10th birthday nears, she dreams of having princess-themed tea party for her birthday, although she is disappointed to learn that her family can't afford such a fancy party. Molly's older sister Jill then says she is too immature to understand how the war changes peoples lives. As Molly's class learns about the war going on and air raid drills, Molly's father announces that he must go to London to help injured soldiers. Molly is furious that her father is leaving her and going to an unsafe city, but he comforts her by calling Molly his "North Star" and telling her to look at the stars. Molly then decides she wants to be the school's "Miss Victory" but she struggles to practice her tap dancing and Allison has been dancing since she was a toddler. Molly also gets chosen to represent her class in the school spelling bee. When Molly's mother takes a job, the girls are looked after by their neighbor Mrs. Gilford, who is stern and obsessed with her son who is in the Navy. Soon after, the McIntires must take in a British girl named Emily Bennett who is the same age as Molly. At first, Emily is very shy and Molly doesn't want to live with her but Jill insists she must. After being peppered with too many questions about her home in London, Emily lies to Linda & Susan by saying that her parents were of royalty and she lived in "Bennett Manor." When Emily wakes up in the midst of a nightmare, she confesses to Molly that her parents have died and she lived in a small apartment above a candy shop and was not rich or royal. Molly forgives her. When Molly sees her mother baking a casserole for Mrs. Gilford, she learns that her son had been killed at war and feels empathetic toward her. Not long after, Miss Campbell's fiancee had also been killed. In the end of the movie, Molly and Emily both win the spelling bee and Molly is chosen to be Miss Victory. She also is very ecstatic to learn that her father is ok and not hurt.Actors

Sydney Miller, a 13-year-old girl who revisits her homeland of Hawaii, discovers her own inner strength through surfing and other island riches. The film takes place in May of 1805, during the Napoleonic Wars. Captain "Lucky Jack" Aubrey of HMS Surprise is ordered to pursue the French privateer Acheron, and "Sink, Burn, or take her as a Prize." As the film opens, the British warship is ambushed by Acheron; Surprise is heavily damaged, while its own cannon fire does not penetrate the enemy ship's hull. Using smaller boats, the crew of Surprise tow the ship into a fog bank and evade pursuit. Aubrey learns from a crewman who saw Acheron being built that it is heavier and faster than Surprise, and the senior officers consider the ship out of their class. Aubrey notes that such a ship could tip the balance of power in Napoleon's favour if allowed to plunder the British whaling fleet at will. He orders pursuit of Acheron, rather than returning to port for repairs. Acheron again ambushes Surprise, but Aubrey slips away in the night by using a clever decoy buoy and ships lamps.

The American Buckley-class destroyer escort USS Haynes detects and attacks a German U-boat that is on its way to rendezvous with a German merchant raider in the South Atlantic Ocean. Captain Murrell (Robert Mitchum), a former officer in the merchant marine now an active duty lieutenant commander in the Naval Reserve, has recently taken command of the Haynes, even though he is still recovering from injuries incurred in the sinking of his previous ship. Before the U-boat is first spotted, one sailor questions the new captain's fitness and ability. However, as the battle begins, Murrell shows himself to be a match for wily U-boat Kapitän von Stolberg (Curt Jürgens) (portrayed as not being enamoured with the Nazi regime) in a prolonged and deadly battle of wits that tests both men and their crews. In 1184 France, Balian (Orlando Bloom), a blacksmith, is haunted by his wife's recent suicide. Mary Tudor falls in love with a new arrival to court, Charles Brandon. She convinces her brother King Henry VIII to make him his Captain of the Guard. The Irish-American, Catholic Sullivan brothers are introduced through a progression of baptisms: George Thomas in 1914, Francis "Frank" Henry in 1916, Joseph Eugene in 1918, Madison "Matt" Abel in 1919, and Albert Leo in 1922 in their hometown of Waterloo, Iowa. There is also sister Genevieve, nicknamed "Gen", making the Sullivans a happy family of eight. As the boys grow, they are doted upon by their mother and sister Genevieve and given stern but loving guidance by their father, who is a railroad freight conductor. Each day, the boys climb the water tower by the tracks and wave to their father as he passes by on the train.
