Filmed in the aftermath of the global financial crisis, and exploring themes of globalization, class distinctions and income inequality, the film opens in the French seaside town of Dunkirk. France (Karin Viard), a middle-aged divorcée, has just been laid off after 20 years at the same shipping company. She takes an overdose of pills but is rushed to hospital and makes a complete recovery. Desperate for employment to support her three children, she moves to Paris where she connects with Ahmed (Zinedine Soualem), the father of a former co-worker. France pretends to be a low-skilled immigrant to find menial work, but is then offered the chance to be the housekeeper for Stéphane Delarue (Gilles Lellouche), a wealthy French banker who has returned to Paris after 10 years in London.

En 1922, après le décès de leur grand-mère paternelle qui se chargeait de leur éducation, le jeune Jean Rezeau et son frère aîné Ferdinand retrouvent leurs parents revenus d'Indochine. Mais leur relation avec leur mère va prendre une tournure cauchemardesque. Celle-ci, qu'ils ne tardent pas à surnommer "Folcoche" (association de "folle" et de "cochonne"), n'hésite pas à mal les nourrir ou leur planter sa fourchette dans la main. Elle agit sur eux avec sadisme, force et autorité tout en privilégiant son troisième fils, Marcel, né en Indochine. Elle ira même jusqu'à vouloir faire croire à un vol de 1000 francs, cachés dans une planque du plancher de son second fils pour justifier de le faire envoyer en maison de redressement. Après leur avoir fait visiter la maison de redressement dans laquelle officiait le précepteur remplaçant celui qu'elle avait congédié quelques jours avant ; son comportement odieux trouvera son explication et sa justification, vers la fin du film lorsqu'elle reviendra mourir chez Jean, après que celui-ci eut compris que cette femme avait été terriblement marquée par son éducation chez ses propres parents.

The film is set in the fictional County Durham mining town of Everington Village during the 1984-85 UK miners' strike, and centres on the character of 11-year-old Billy Elliot, his love of dance, and his hopes of becoming a professional ballet dancer. Billy lives with his widowed father, Jackie, and older brother, Tony, both coal miners out on strike (the latter being the union leader), and also his maternal grandmother, who probably has Alzheimer's disease and once aspired to be a professional dancer. Philippe Abrams is the manager of the postal service (La Poste) in Salon-de-Provence, Bouches-du-Rhône, in southern France. He is married to Julie, whose depressive character makes his life miserable. Philippe does everything to get a job at an office on the Mediterranean seaside to make her happy. As this favourable position will be granted to somebody who is disabled, Abrams decides to pretend that he is. However, the management finds out. As punishment, he is banished for two years to Bergues, a town near Dunkirk in northern France. Northern France – and the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region in particular – is considered "the sticks" – a cold and rainy place inhabited by unsophisticated ch'tis who speak a strange language (called "ch'ti" in local parlance, and "cheutimi" in the South). He has to spend his first night at Antoine's place, a co-worker of his. Philippe initially dislikes Antoine for his rude behaviour and because he thinks Antoine is gay (he found photographs of Antoine dressed as a woman, but they were taken during a carnival party). However, later in the film, Antoine and Philippe become best friends.

In a theatre, Guillaume recounts how his life developed as a youth. As a young effeminate boy, his mother casually dismisses his antics. When he asks to go learn Spanish, his mother sends him to La Línea de la Concepción. There he stays with Paqui, a Spanish woman unable to speak French. As they awkwardly try to communicate, she suggests teaching him how to dance the sevillanas. Becoming proficient, Guillaume dances at a local festival but is subjected to laughter. Oblivious to why, he asks a woman named Pilar to dance with him. She politely refuses, explaining to him how he dances like a girl. He asks her if she thinks he looks like a girl. She agrees and he happily remarks that his mother would be delighted.
