Synopsis
Né en Belgique à une date indéterminée, de religion catholique romaine, Hercule Poirot est retraité de la police belge, où il a occupé les fonctions de chef de la Sûreté à Bruxelles. Pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, son pays est occupé par les Allemands ; blessé à une jambe, il est évacué avec d'autres réfugiés dans la petite ville anglaise de Styles St Mary, où il résout la première énigme connue du grand public (il en avait résolu d'autres auparavant mais non retranscrites par Agatha Christie) : La Mystérieuse Affaire de Styles. Il s'installe ensuite dans différents appartements à Londres et devient détective privé1.Actors

Xavier Quinn (Denzel Washington) is the chief of police on a small, unnamed Caribbean island (the novel was set on the fictional island of St. Caro). When Donald Pater, the millionaire owner of a luxury resort hotel, is found murdered, everyone assumes that the culprit is Maubee (Robert Townsend), a petty crook who also happens to be Quinn's best friend. Quinn doesn't believe it and clashes with the local bureaucracy: Thomas Elgin (James Fox), an arrogant political fixer, and the island's underqualified governor (Norman Beaton). After traveling to a small village in Ecuador, Miami tabloid news reporter Manolo Bonilla (Leguizamo) witnesses the death of a local boy after Vinicio Cepeda, a traveling salesman, hits the boy in his pickup truck. When Cepeda attempts to back his truck away from the boy, a mob, led by the boy's father, Don Lucho, pulls him from his car, severely beats him, and sets him on fire before the local authorities intervene.
