Never Say Die is a 1939 romantic comedy film starring Martha Raye and Bob Hope. Based on a play of the same title by William H. Post and William Collier, Sr., which ran on Broadway for 151 performances in 1912, the film was directed by Elliot Nugent and written for the screen by Dan Hartman, Frank Butler and Preston Sturges. The supporting cast features Andy Devine, Alan Mowbray, Gale Sondergaard, Sig Ruman and Monty Woolley.

The Post/Collier play had previously been adapted in 1924 as a silent film of the same name and was remade as the 2004 South Korean film Someone Special. Other films with the same or similar titles are not related.

Synopsis

When test results get mixed up, multi-millionaire hypochondriac John Kidley (Bob Hope) is told that he only has a month to live. He dumps his fiancee, Juno Marko (Gale Sondergaard), and heads for the Swiss spa of Bad Gaswasser, where he meets a young Texas heiress, Mickey Hawkins (Martha Raye).

Gerald Fitzgerald, un Américain, épouse Lisa Della Robbia, une belle Italienne chanteuse d'opéra. Ils vivent une belle romance jusqu'à ce qu'elle reprenne son travail. Lisa repousse la date de son retour et Gerald perd patience et commence une procédure de divorce. Avant même que Lisa ait accepté le divorce, il renoue une relation avec Flora Preston. Mais un jour ils sont surpris par le retour de Lisa, qui jure qu'elle aussi a un amant qu'elle a l'intention d'épouser. Lorsque Gerald l'accuse de n'avoir aucune idée de ce qu'est d'être une épouse, de colère elle accepte le divorce, alors qu'elle l'aime encore et qu'elle n'a en réalité pas d'amant. Lisa insiste pour que Flora soit présente alors qu'ils discutent des aspects financiers du divorce et invite le couple à assister à son spectacle à l'opéra et à la rejoindre pour dîner ensuite. Finalement Gerald et Lisa se réconcilient et décident de partir en Amérique du Sud.

Vincent Day (Warren William) is a prosecutor who is on the fast track to success.
