New Trial (hangeul : 재심 ; RR : Jaesim ; litt. « Nouveau procès ») est un film sud-coréen écrit et réalisé par Kim Tae-yoon, sorti le 15 février 2017. Le scénario est inspiré par l'« affaire du meurtre d'Iksan » de 2000 dans laquelle un adolescent avait été accusé par erreur du meurtre d'un chauffeur de taxi et avait passé dix ans en prison.

Il totalise presque 2,5 millions d'entrées dans le box-office sud-coréen de 2017.

Synopsis

Le film raconte l'histoire d'un homme dont la vie est détruite quand il est accusé du meurtre d'un chauffeur de taxi qu'il n'a pas commis, et doit signer des aveux forcés alors qu'il est brutalisé lors des interrogatoires policiers. Dix ans plus tard, il demande l'aide d'un avocat endetté pour restaurer l'honneur de son nom.

Gang-cheol (whose name means "iron" in Korean) was once a legendary street gangster in Busan, but he put away his fists and cleaned up his act for the sake of his mother Soon-i, who has dementia. Kim Kyung-ho (Ahn Sung-ki) is a math professor who was fired by his university in 1995, after he questioned the validity of a math question in its entrance exam. Tenants who have been evicted from their homes are in the middle of a sit-in protest, when the police arrive. A 20-year-old police officer and a 16-year-old boy, the son of a demonstrator, end up dead. The boy's father, Park Jae-ho gets arrested for the cop's death, but he insists it was self-defense and that he had only been trying to protect his son from being beaten by the riot police. Rookie public defender Yoon Jin-won is initially doubtful of Park's claims, until he gets approached by reporter Gong Soo-kyung who has her own suspicions about the government's account of the incident. Yoon then teams up with fellow lawyer Jang Dae-seok to pursue the truth through a jury trial.
