Synopsis
Tirée, poussée, hissée, Jeanne parvient in extremis en salle d'accouchement pour mettre au monde son petit dernier. Elle mènerait une vie plutôt épanouie, Jeanne, dans son chalet montagnard au milieu de ses cinq enfants, n'était le caractère quelque peu volage de son mari Edouard. Il l'adore, c'est entendu, mais ne peut s'empêcher de se " réchauffer " auprès de filles plus jeunes.Actors

Catherine et Marcello forment un couple uni. Leur fille, Camille, âgée de neuf mois, représente pour eux l'axe autour duquel tourne le monde. Catherine et Marcello s'avouent heureux et ne voient pas plus loin que le bout de leur bonheur. Mais un jour, ce qui n'arrive qu'aux autres s'abat sur eux : la petite Camille meurt. Catherine et Marcello refusent d'accepter ce coup du sort : ils rompent avec leur vie passée, leurs amis, leurs proches et s'enferment dans leur appartement. Là, ils vivent repliés sur eux-mêmes, traversant des périodes d'incompréhension. Marcello abandonne son métier ; Catherine, lorsqu'elle sort, passe ses journées à vanter les mérites de sa fille aux mères de famille qui promènent leurs enfants dans des parcs… Et puis un soir, las de ce décor qui ne change jamais, Catherine et Marcello décident de partir loin, à l'aventure. Dans un village où ils s'arrêtent, ils croisent une noce. Peu à peu, la vie reprend ses droits : Catherine et Marcello boivent, dansent, rient. Leur gaieté, d'abord factice, devient plus réelle. Mais au petit matin, le souvenir de Camille resurgit sous la forme d'une vieille photo oubliée.

The film follows the friends of a recently deceased minor painter Jean-Baptiste Emmerich as they take a train from Paris to Limoges, where he is to be buried, attend his funeral, then gather at the home of his twin brother, Lucien. The mourners include François, who spends the journey listening to a series of taped conversations with the painter; Jean-Marie and Claire, a couple whose marriage has broken down; Emmerich's former lover Lucie; Louis, a close friend of François, and Bruno a young man with whom he has fallen in love. As the train heads south, the travellers watch the car carrying Emmerich's coffin being driven recklessly alongside the train by their friend Thierry.

In a farmhouse in southern Italy, an old woman, the matriarch of an Italian family, dies. Her husband summons their three sons, each of whom are facing difficult personal problems, back to their farmhouse. One of their sons, Raffaele, is a judge living in Rome, who is presiding over a terrorism case for which he risks assassination, and is in fear of his life. Another son, Rocco, who lives in Naples, is religious and works as a counselor at a correctional institute for boys, so that he can fulfill his dream of helping troubled teenagers. The third son, Nicola, who lives in Turin, is a factory worker involved in a labour dispute as well as a failed marriage. Each of the men grieves in his own way, while also wrestling with the other emotional issues that are pressing on them.

Visconti's retelling of the Electra story starts with Sandra/Electra (Claudia Cardinale) returning to her ancestral home in Italy - and reviving an intimate involvement with her brother (Sorel) which troubles her naive husband (Michael Craig) - on the eve of an official ceremony commemorating the death of her Jewish father in a Nazi concentration camp. As ever with Visconti, he is ambivalently drawn to the decadent society he is ostensibly criticising; and Armando Nannuzzi's camera lovingly caresses the creaking old mansion, set in a landscape of crumbling ruins, where the incestuous siblings determine to wreak revenge on the mother (Bell) and stepfather (Ricci) who supposedly denounced their father.
