Nightmares is a 1983 American horror anthology film directed by Joseph Sargent, and starring Emilio Estevez, Lance Henriksen, Cristina Raines, Veronica Cartwright and Richard Masur. The film is made up of four short films based on urban legends; the first concerns a woman who encounters a killer in the backseat of her car; the second concerns a video game-addicted teenager who is consumed by his game; the third focuses on a fallen priest who is stalked by a pickup truck from hell; and the last follows a suburban family battling a giant rat in their home.

The four segments of the film were initially conceived and shot for ABC's thriller anthology series Darkroom, but were deemed too intense for television. When Darkroom was canceled in 1982, Universal Pictures combined the four outstanding segments and released them theatrically as Nightmares in September 1983.

Synopsis

In the not-too-distant future where corporations control nearly every aspect of human life, a man named Luke Gibson is involved in a car accident that claims the life of his wife and their unborn child. Luke has severe brain damage, but Hope Corporation agrees to implant a chip into his brain to save his life. He discovers that this chip also constantly sends advertisements until either the person obtains the product, or they go insane. While trying to figure out why they did this to him and who he is, he finds out that the chip is a test product with a fail-safe that could kill him. He succumbs to the effects but the Corporation fears that their test might be discovered, and they decide to activate the fail-safe. Just before it goes off, a group of underground hackers led by Hal and "Keyboard" hack into the chip and save his life. After using the chip to guide him away from Hope Corp. pursuers, they agree to try to help him remember who he is in exchange for assisting in their fight against Hope Corp. They show him that his accident was no accident but actually planned by Hope Corp. so they could use him as a test subject. He agrees to help but is captured during the attempt and taken to a facility controlled by Hope Corp. Luke, with the help of Punk Red and Punk Blue, manages to fight his way to the leader of the project, Virgil Kirkhill. Virgil is killed after a short confrontation, and Luke escapes. Teenage computer whiz Kyle Baxter (Ethan Randall) enters, and subsequently cheats in a virtual reality version of laser tag(this was due to losing in a round caused by an uninvited player interfering). The prize is a robotic opponent to compete against in a real-world version of the game. When "Evolver" (the robot, voiced by William H. Macy) is first delivered, it appears to be quite simply a toy, but is revealed that whenever Evolver is defeated, he "evolves" up to the next level of the game, becoming smarter, quicker and harder to beat. Kyle, his friend Zach, Jamie, (a girl he met during the competition and lost because of her,) and his sister, Ali (Nassira Nicola) soon begin the first level of the game with Evolver. The first game (Evolver vs. Kyle, Zach, Jamie, and Ali) passes quickly, and all appears to be fine. Later, because Evolver has recording capabilities, Kyle and Zach send Evolver into the girls locker room at their school. However, Evolver is discovered by the girls there and is pushed into the boys locker room, where he switches to game mode. The only occupant, Dwight, a bully jock, meets Evolver, who takes him as an enemy to defeat.
