Synopsis
Happy-go-lucky advertising executive David Basner (Tom Hanks), who recently got a promotion at his Chicago ad agency, returns to work from a vacation. He is carefree until his parents split up after 36 years of marriage. Out of the blue, he must care for his aging, bitter father Max (Jackie Gleason), as well as support his emotionally fragile mother Lorraine (Eva Marie Saint). Max has also just been fired from his 35-year career in the garment industry. At work, David is developing a commercial for Colonial Airlines, owned by the rich and bullish Andrew Woolridge (Barry Corbin). A successful ad campaign would likely gain David a promotion to partner in his company. David develops a relationship with Woolridge's daughter, no-nonsense Cheryl Ann Wayne (Sela Ward). His father is well aware of David's playboy nature.Actors

Johnny (Pacino) is a middle-aged man, just released from prison who's looking for a job. He's hired as a short-order cook in a local diner where he meets Frankie, a pretty but emotionally damaged waitress who is trying to move on with her life after getting out of an abusive relationship just a couple years prior to the start of the film. In the summer of 1963, Jeffrey Willis (Matt Dillon) joins some friends for a day of Gin rummy at the El Flamingo Club, a private beach resort. Tom Turner, a con artist, is busted working cons to pay off his gambling debt to a loan shark. He is sentenced by the judge to find a full-time job by the end of the year and keep it, or be sent to jail. He finds work at the post office sorting mail in the dead letter office. Surrounded by quirky coworkers, Tom finds out what happens to letters addressed to the Easter bunny, Elvis, and God, and out of curiosity reads one of the letters sent to God. While reading the letter, sent by a needy single mother, Tom drops his paycheck and it is mailed back to the single mother. When Tom comes to retrieve his paycheck he sees the good it has done and leaves, not knowing that his burnt out workaholic lawyer coworker sees him doing so. Believing Tom sent the money on purpose, she rallies the rest of the dead letter office workers to continue what Tom has started. Tom, becoming the unwilling leader of the group, starts answering more and more letters sent to the post office asking God for help. Hilarity ensues as the group answers more prayers, enriching people's lives, while Tom tries to find love with a coffee bar waitress and keep out of jail.
