Tony Naylor, Al Marsh and Jerry Ralby are looking for backers for their new Broadway show. They have just run out of options when Al gets a letter from his Aunt's attorneys and finds he is a part-owner of a dress salon in Paris. Thinking to sell his share, he, Jerry, and Tony fly to Paris, only to find the shop is almost bankrupt. There they also find Stephanie and Clarisse, who own the other shares of the business. Tony is able to convince the anxious creditors to back a fashion show, hoping to put the shop back on top. As the plot progresses, Tony is torn between his growing affection for Stephanie and his desire to finance his show. Meanwhile, Jerry falls for Clarisse, and Al has a crush on Stephanie. Eventually, Al goes for Bubbles, who has followed the boys from New York.

When the film begins, a musical show before closed down before it has had a chance to even open. Jimmie Doyle (Jack Mulhall), who wrote the musical intends to rewrite it while his girlfriend, Dixie Dugan (Alice White), fed up at wasting her time for a show that never even opened, is intent on finding a new career. While at a nightclub, Dixie does a musical number and catches the eye of Frank Buelow (John Miljan), a Hollywood director. Buelow persuades Dixie to go to Hollywood, where he will have a part waiting for her in his upcoming films.

Gar Evans (William Powell) agrees to promote Ginsburg's product, artificial rubber created from sewage, only after his friend Mike Donahey (Frank McHugh) assures him it is not a scam. Gar is superstitious; he believes he will only succeed if his long-suffering girlfriend Francine Dale (Evelyn Brent) joins them on the venture. She, however, has given up on him, especially since he left her five days before to pick up something, and never came back. Nella Vargo (Swanson) is a Hungarian prima donna whose latest performances include singing Tosca in Venice. Joe E. Brown and Jack Whiting are two bond clerks on a weekend vacation. Brown is pursued by a local sheriff after he attempts to illegally fish in a no fishing zone. As Brown and Whiting are running away, they arrive at an expensive hotel and end up rescuing two women (Bernice Claire and Laura Lee) who have just been in a car accident. Whiting falls in love with Claire while Brown falls for Lee. Whiting convinces Brown to stay at the hotel for the rest of the weekend. Brown begins lying to everyone at the hotel and soon everyone thinks that Brown and Whiting are millionaires. Claire's father (Edwin Maxwell) owns a speedboat and is planning to enter a big speedboat race. Since Brown has told everyone that Whiting is an expert boatsman, Claire hopes that he will be able to help her father win the race. When Claire's father (Maxwell) fires his pilot, who has been caught taking a bribe to throw the race, Claire convinces her father to let Whiting pilot his boat. Maxwell's main opponent, played by Edmund Breese, discovering that Whiting is fraud, threatens to expose him unless he excepts a bribe of 30,000 dollars to throw the race. Whiting pretends to accept the bribe but nevertheless wins the race for Claire and her father. During the race, Claire and her father learn that Whiting has taken a bribe, and are disappointed. After he wins the race, Whiting explains what happened and Claire and her father forgive him for not telling them the truth earlier.

In London in 1750, renowned English actor David Garrick announces onstage that he has been invited to Paris to work with the prestigious Comédie-Française. A person in the audience jeers that the French want him to teach them how to act. The playwright Beaumarchais (Lionel Atwill) returns to the Comédie-Française and attributes the remark to Garrick himself. The outraged French actors, led by their president, Picard (Melville Cooper), decide to make him an object of public ridicule. They take over a wayside inn where he will be staying, and Beaumarchais devises a plot intended to humiliate Garrick by frightening him into returning to England.

M Jacoby, une veuve originaire de Brooklyn dont le fils a été tué par les Japonais pendant la guerre, accepte à regret d'accompagner sa fille Alice et son gendre Jerry pour un voyage au Japon, où Jerry doit participer à la négociation d'un traité commercial. Lors de la croisière trans-pacifique, le ressentiment de M Jacoby à propos des jamonais est encore très fort lorsqu'elle encontre sur M. Asano, un industriel japonais dont la famille a elle aussi été beaucoup touchée par la guerre. Leur amitié naissante est malmenée lorsque Jerry suspecte M. Asano, lui-même un des négociateurs du traité, d'avoir cherché un gain politique dans cette relation. Bien que M Jacoby n'y croie pas vraiment, elle refuse de voir M. Asano lors de leur dernière soirée à bord. Une fois au Japon, Jerry offense sans le faire exprès M. Asano, et la conférence est annulée. M Jacoby se rend alors chez M. Asano. Après une soirée très agréable, il accepte de reprendre les négociations. Alors que les trois Américains se préparent à repartir, M Jacoby est surprise de recevoir une demande en mariage de M. Asano, mais aussi par la réaction négative d'Alice et Jerry. Mais en fait elle refuse surtout car elle considère que M. Asano et elle sont encore trop marqués par leurs histoires personnelles. Des mois plus tard, M. Asano arrive à New York comme délégué aux Nations unies. Il rencontre à nouveau M Jacoby, qui accepte désormais qu'il lui fasse la cour.
