The script is based on the true story of the Battle of Kolwezi that happened in 1978. It was diligently described in a book of the same name by former 1 REP Captain Pierre Sergent. He published his book in 1979; the film came out in 1980. Raoul Coutard shot the film in a documentary style.
Synopsis
The film is based on true events: In 1978 approximately 3000 heavily armed fighters from Katanga crossed the border to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and marched into Kolwezi, a mining centre for copper and cobalt. They took 3000 civilians as hostages. Within a few days between 90 and 280 hostages were killed. The rebels appeared to be unpredictable and are reported to have threatened to annihilate all civilians. The Congo's head of state Mobutu urged Belgium, France and the USA to help. France sent the Foreign Legion's 2nd Foreign Parachute Regiment who were flown from Corsica to Kolwezi. Following their arrival they secured the perimeter in cooperation with Belgian soldiers from Zaire and then started to evacuate the civilists. Within two days more than 2000 Europeans and about 3000 African citizens were saved. The film strives to depict these events in a dramatised form, concentrating on the Europeans' plight.Actors

Atteint d'un cancer du poumon, un officier de la marine nationale française se voit confier un ultime commandement après l'avoir expressément réclamé, celui de l'escorteur d'escadre Jauréguiberry dont c'est également la dernière mission avant son désarmement. Il est chargé de l'assistance et de la surveillance de la grande pêche sur les bancs de Terre-Neuve. Le commandant mène aussi une quête personnelle, enracinée dans les guerres coloniales françaises depuis un évènement sur le Mékong en 1948 : croiser une dernière fois un homme qu'il a connu, devenu patron d'un chalutier. Le déroulement du film révèle qu'il avait donné sa parole à cet homme, parole qu'il n'avait pas pu tenir en raison de divers événements politiques. On peut supposer que, durant toute sa vie qui maintenant s'achève, il a souffert de ce manquement.

A small village in the Jura is split by the river Loue which creates the line of demarcation between Nazi occupied France and freedom. A French officer, Pierre (Ronet), is released by the Nazi soldiers to find his chateau converted into a German command centre. Whilst he is obliged to co-operate with the enemy, his wife Mary (Seberg) supports the resistance movement and is willing to risk her life for it. The Nazis step up their activity against the resistance, insisting that any who attempt to cross the line of demarcation will be shot. When his wife is arrested, Pierre decides to switch his allegiance. The movement is hindered by an informer and another man who pretends to help the resistance fighters but leads them to the Nazis and steals all their possessions.
