Add to a movie listThe Eagle (Polish: Orzeł) is a 1959 Polish war film directed by Leonard Buczkowski. It is based on the true story of the Polish World War II submarine ORP Orzeł. Since the real Orzeł was sunk in the war, to assure authenticity her role was played by her sister ship, the ORP Sęp. The film was entered into the 1st Moscow International Film Festival.
Basically the story is freely based on the so-called 'Tallinn-episode' of the Polish submarine 'Orzel', which in Sep. 1939 entered the harbour of then still neutral Estonia to leave her commanding officer with symptoms of illness. The Estonian authorities tried to intern the sub under the pressure from the Nazi-Germany, but the 'Orzel' escaped.
Synopsis
Basé sur une histoire vraie du sous-marin polonais "Orzel" (L'Aigle): Septembre 1939, "Orzel" arrive au port neutre estonien à Tallinn. Sous la pression de l'Allemagne, les Estoniens ont interné le navire. Le commandant Grabinski décide de s'échapper en Angleterre à travers la mer Baltique, sans aucune carte qui a été confisquée et avec seulement une petite quantité de carburant à bord.Actors

The story is told from the viewpoint of Lt. Werner (Herbert Grönemeyer), who has been assigned as a war correspondent on the German submarine U-96 in October 1941. He meets its captain (Jürgen Prochnow), chief engineer (Klaus Wennemann), and the crew in a French nightclub. Thomsen (Otto Sander), another captain, gives a crude drunken speech to celebrate his Ritterkreuz award, in which he openly mocks not only Winston Churchill but implicitly Adolf Hitler as well.

American David Ross (William Holden), a former tugboat captain now in the Canadian army, is hastily commissioned in the Royal Navy and assigned to rotating command of W88, a double-crewed rescue tug then in dry dock due to battle damage.
