Distribuée par Paramount Pictures, la saga est composée de cinq films ainsi que d'un spin-off, Paranormal Activity: Tokyo Night étant une suite non officielle au premier film, et se passant au Japon. Tous les films de la saga ont été filmés au format found footage.
La saga Paranormal Activity met en scène la famille de deux sœurs, Katie et Kristi, qui sont témoins de phénomènes surnaturels dans leur maison. La caméra étant tenue par la famille, l'image est parfois floue et mal cadrée à la manière du film Le Projet Blair Witch.
En 2019, les studios Paramount et Blumhouse ont annoncé le développement d'un nouvel opus.

Synopsis
Katie, Micah, un couple sans histoires, viennent de s'installer dans une belle demeure de Los Angeles. Mais très rapidement, le quotidien de ces jeunes gens est perturbé par d'étranges phénomènes : des bruits inquiétants, des objets qui se déplacent pendant la nuit... Micah, qui vient de faire l'acquisition d'une caméra vidéo, décide de l'utiliser pour filmer ce qui se passe dans leur maison pendant la nuit. Mais les images tournées par l'appareil lui révèlent une réalité des plus effrayantes : des objets semblent se déplacer sans explication rationnelle.De plus, les bruits étranges se multiplient. Katie, Micah font appel à un médium qui leur confirme que les lieux sont hantés.Actors

Young couple Katie and Micah move to a new house in San Diego. Katie claims an evil presence has been haunting her since she was a child, so Micah sets up a camera in their bedroom to record any paranormal activity that occurs while they sleep. Katie hires psychic Dr. Fredrichs, who reveals that Katie is being haunted by a demon that feeds off of negative energy and is intent on tormenting Katie. He advises them not to communicate with the demon and to contact demonologist Dr. Johann Averies if needed. Katie seems interested, but Micah does not take this seriously.
