Synopsis
La tradition a toujours été respectée dans ce petit village du Gujarat, surtout par les femmes qui ne remettent pas en cause l'organisation patriarcale, voire franchement phallocrate, de cette société rurale. Rani, jeune veuve, négocie, avec son amie Lajjo, le mariage de son fils Gulab avec une jeune adolescente, Janaki. L'affaire est conclue. Quand les deux femmes reviennent à leur village, un conseil est réuni pour décider l'avenir d'une jeune fille qui fuit sa belle-famille parce que son mari la délaisse et que les autres hommes de la belle-famille abusent d'elle. Mais les anciens ne sauraient tolérer une telle infamie : il renvoie la jeune fille à son sort. Rani tente vainement, mais mollement de protester. Rani, Lajjo, questionnées, aiguillonnées par leur amie Bijli, prostituée et danseuse d'une sorte de cabaret, commencent à remettre en cause cet ordre moral qui interdit l'éducation et l'indépendance aux femmes. Le film se termine par la crémation symbolique du démon Rāvaṇa lors de la nuit de Dussehra commémorant la libération de Sītā par son époux Rāma, nuit au cours de laquelle périt par le feu Manoj, le mari alcoolique et violent de Lajjo. Puis les trois femmes partent sur le triporteur bariolé du cabaret, libres et sans but.Actors

The film opens with Shalini (Tejaswini Kolhapure) a lonely and troubled housewife addicted to alcohol, battling depression. She contemplates suicide, hoping to evoke some reaction from her stoic second husband, police chief Shoumik Bose (Ronit Roy), who behaves as if she doesn't exist. Shalini feels trapped in the marriage as Shoumik doesn't talk, taps her phone calls and treats her like a criminal. When she is about to shoot herself in the head with her husband's gun, she is interrupted by her 10-year-old daughter (from her first marriage) Kali (Anishika Shrivastava). Unaware of her mother's state of mind, Kali asks her to call her father, Shalini's estranged ex-husband, Rahul (Rahul Bhat). Rahul is a struggling actor. The film begins with an aged man entering a graveyard to lay flowers on someone's grave. He hears the noise of someone struggling in a coffin nearby. He digs into that place and opens the coffin. To his utmost surprise, he discovers a girl buried alive in the coffin. He takes the girl and admits her to the hospital. Inspector Anton Veldez (Siddharth Kher),the officer-in-charge of the case, tells the doctor to let him know as soon as she regains consciousness and asks one of his officers to stay alert in case the girl is attacked again. Interestingly, that very officer turns out to be a dishonest one and calls an anonymous person informing him of the girl being alive. He, then, secretly enters her cabin for a second attempt to kill her and this time too, by suffocation. He presses a pillow on her face and she manages to press the alarm button. This causes the nurse to rush to her cabin. The officer goes out of the cabin pretending to be unaware of the attack. Now, that the girl has become conscious, the doctor calls Inspector Anton. When Anton, along with the doctor, goes into her cabin, they find her missing. Anton, frustrated, sends his officers to look for her and himself goes to the ground floor to meet the dean. While he is waiting for the lift, he remembers the monitor in her cabin still working meaning that the girl was right there when they entered. He goes back to the cabin but the girl had already escaped. She crawls her way to the store room. The girl is revealed to be Sonika (Surveen Chawla) and is a mistress of a powerful and influential political leader Mandar Mhatre (Sushant Singh). Sonika is a photography student. Sonika is kept isolated and tortured by Mandar. She reluctantly finds comfort in her college friend Akshay Bedi (Jay Bhanushali) who secretly loves her. They both fall in love but Sonika is helpless since she can't tell Akshay about her being the mistress of Mandar. Akshay gets to know the truth and comforts her. They both move to a different home and decide to spend their lives together. They declare their love and have sex. Sonika is happy and finds some hope that she will be free from the torture that she had to tolerate. Mandar tries to find Sonika but she is no where to be found in her house. Later on he gets to know that she has eloped with her lover. Mandar and his men reach Akshay's house and attack him. Sonika cries and pleades Mandar to leave Akshay but he refuses to. Mandar's men kill Akshay by tying him to a rope and throwing him in a lake in a car. Mandar also buries Sonika alive in a coffin. After she is rescued she vows to extract vengeance upon Mandar for murdering Akshay and for herself.She at first kills the police officer who tried to kill her.Then she writes a diary describing her torture. She dives inside the same lake and puts it in the car. She then kills one of the three men who were involved along with Mandar in killing Akshay. After that, she informs Anton about Akshay's dead body. However even though Anton gets hold of Akshay and the diary Mandar makes it look that Sonika killed Akshay. Sonika then again manages to put everything in right order and kills the another man of Mandar involved with Mandar in killing Akshay. Then Sonika teams up with Mandar's arch rival and get hold of the third man of Mandar involved in killing Akshay. However all of a sudden Mandar himself kills that person. It is revealed that the archrival had becomes partner after Mandar offered to share his seats with him in election. Mandar makes it look that Sonika did it and thus police officer catch her. However she manages to escape with Anton's help. Then Sonika kills Mandar with Mandar's wife's help (who came to know about Mandar's wrongdoing accidentally).

The film opens with the elderly Ravi (Soumitra Chatterjee) driving to an abandoned carpet factory in West Bengal. As he explores the remains of the factory, he finds his bed and other memoirs. The story flashbacks to the early 1940s in pre-independent India, with Ravi Gupta (Sikandar Agarwal) a child laborer in the factory, saving up his earnings so that he can leave the factory one day. Ravi befriends a girl of his own age, Masha (Tumpa Das), who's been sold to the factory by her father. When the obstinate factory manager (Biplab Dasgupta) tries to sell Masha to a rich man, Ravi unsuccessfully tries to match the bid. He subsequently gives her the money to escape, and as they part Masha promises to wait for Ravi at every full moon at Calcutta's great Shiva temple.

Laila (Kalki Koechelin) is a wheelchair bound teenager with cerebral palsy. She is a student at Delhi University and an aspiring writer who writes lyrics and creates electronic sounds for an indie band at the university. Laila falls for the lead singer of the college band and is heartbroken when she is rejected. But she soon overcomes this phase, when she gets a scholarship for a semester at New York University and moves there with her mother (Revathy). Living in Manhattan, she meets an attractive young man named Jared (William Moseley) in her creative writing class, who is assigned to help her in typing. She also meets the fiery young activist Khanum (Sayani Gupta), a blind girl of a Pakistani and Bangladeshi descent, whom she later falls in love with. As she embarks on a journey of sexual discovery, she figures out she is bisexual, as she still feels attracted to men like Jared in spite of being with Khanum. Laila's mother believing the two are like best friends and oblivious to the fact that Khanum is her daughter's lover, invites her to Delhi to spend the winter break with the family. It is during that time that Laila finally finds the courage to tell her mother about her sexuality and her actual relationship with Khanum, which her mother initially disapproves. After a short while Laila's mother falls sick and she learns that her mother had fourth stage colon cancer which has fallen into relapse after previous treatments. Later Laila and her mother patch up and come to terms with each other. After her mother dies Laila plays a recorded speech at her mother's funeral telling how much she loved her and how she was the only one who ever understood her. The story ends with Laila going on a date, with herself, signifying that she now has taken control of her life and doesn't need anyone else to love and care for her.
