John Keller, l'inventeur d'un nouvel avion révolutionnaire, se rend à l'usine de Radex Airplane Factory en Californie en compagnie de Nick Carter, qui voyage sous le nom de Robert Chalmers, assistant du directeur de l'usine Hiram Streeter. Une fois en vol, le pilote feint une panne de moteur et atterrit. Il a en fait rendez-vous avec un groupe d'espions qui veulent voler les plans de Keller. Nick déjoue leur plan et, avec l'aide de l'hôtesse Lou Farnsby, pilote l'avion et ses passagers jusqu'en Californie. À l'usine Radex, Streeter explique à Nick que des plans secrets ont été volés, malgré une sécurité renforcée. L'avenir de l'usine est lié au développement de l'avion de Keller et c'est pour enquêter sur ces vols que Streeter a fait venir Nick Carter. La liste de suspects de Nick inclut Lou, et il demande à Streeter de l'employer à l'infirmerie. Nick est aidé dans son enquête par Bartholomew, un détective amateur. Lorsqu'un sabotage détruit le nouvel avion lors d'un vol d'essai, Nick commence à suspecter Keller, mais ce dernier est assassiné. Quand Nick attrape un des patients du Dr Frankton avec des photos des plans dans ses bandages, Frankton réalise qu'il est sur le point d'être arrêté et prend Lou en otage. Frankton s'enfuit par bateau de l'usine, avec Nick et à sa poursuite en avion. Finalement, Bartholomew et la police du port arrivent pour arrêter les espions.

In Vienna, 15-year-old Marie Antoinette (Norma Shearer) is informed by her mother, Empress Marie Therese of Austria (Alma Kruger), that Marie is to marry the future King of France, the Dauphin Louis XVI (Robert Morley). The young princess is excited to meet her future husband and live as a queen, but the Dauphin she married is actually a shy man, more at home with locksmithing than attending parties at the court at Versailles. After they are married, Marie tries desperately to please her husband, and after some trepidation, the Dauphin realizes he can trust Marie and tells her he cannot produce heirs. Without children to occupy her time and attention, Marie is bored and associates with the power-hungry Duc d'Orleans (Joseph Schildkraut), even though the Dauphin does not like him.

Joe Stefanos (Paul Valentine) arrives at small, out-of-the-way Bridgeport, California, in search of Jeff Bailey (Mitchum). Jeff is away, off on a picnic with local girl Ann Miller (Virginia Huston). In 1875 Argentina, a young gaucho kills another man in a duel. His prison sentence is commuted to join the army. He serves under the tough Major Salinas, but soon grows tired of military life and deserts. He becomes Val Verde and leads a band of gauchos to resist the increasing encroachment of railroad agents into the Pampas. In the meantime Salinas quits the army and becomes chief of police, so he can continue his vendetta against him. After falling in love with an aristocratic woman, Martin decides to escape with her to Chile, crossing the Andes on horseback. On the way Teresa tells him that she is pregnant, so they decide to return and get married instead, because of her safety and that for them is inconceivable for the child to be raised without a legitimate last name. When they arrive at the Cathedral, the police follows them so Martin has to escape again, leaving Teresa in the care of Father Fernandez. That night Miguel talks with Teresa about a deal he reached with the Governor, in which Martin voluntarily turns himself in, in exchange for a 3 year prison sentence and a clean slate. Teresa tells Miguel where Martin is hiding, but Salinas also follows, prompting a horse chase through a cattle run, that causes Miguel to fall from his horse and be trampled to death by the herd of cows. That same night, Martin returns filled with guilt to meet Teresa and while she offers to escape to Brazil or Europe, he declines and tells her to meet him at noon at the Cathedral. The next day Father Fernandez arranges a meeting alone with Salinas, where Martin agrees to turn himself in and face the consequences of his actions, as long as he can first marry Teresa as a free man.
