Il s'agit de la seconde collaboration entre l'acteur irlandais Daniel Day-Lewis et le cinéaste américain après There Will Be Blood sorti en 2007. En juin 2017, l'acteur déclare qu'il s'agira du dernier film de sa carrière, annonçant qu'il abandonne le métier d'acteur.
Le film est dédié au réalisateur Jonathan Demme, décédé en 2017.
Synopsis
Dans le monde de la mode du Londres des années 1950, le couturier Reynolds Woodcock, proche de sa sœur Cyril, est engagé pour dessiner les vêtements des gens de la haute société, tel que les stars de cinéma, les héritières ou les mondains, et de la famille royale. In 1898, Daniel Plainview, a prospector in New Mexico, mines a potentially precious ore vein from a pit mine hole. In the process of dynamiting the lode, he falls from a broken rung of the tunnel ladder and breaks his leg. He saves a silver sample, climbs out of the mine, and drags himself to the nearest assay office to record his and gets a Silver and Gold certificate claim. In 1902, he discovers oil near Los Angeles, California and establishes a small drilling company. Following the death of a worker in an accident, Daniel adopts the man's orphaned son. The boy, named H. W., becomes his nominal "business partner", allowing Daniel to paint himself to potential investors as "a family man".

Dirk Diggler (Michael Stein) was born as Steven Samuel Adams on April 15, 1961 outside of Saint Paul, Minnesota. His parents are a construction worker and a boutique shop owner who attend church every Sunday and believe in God. Looking for a career as a male model, Diggler drops out of school at age 16 and leaves home. Jack Horner (Robert Ridgely) discovers Diggler at a falafel stand.
