Firebird 2772: Love's Cosmozone) is a 1980 Japanese animated science fiction feature film directed by Taku Sugiyama and written by Osamu Tezuka, based on Tezuka's manga series Phoenix (Hi no Tori). An "international version" called Space Firebird was dubbed in Hong Kong and then released in the UK in 1980. An edited version was released in the United States in 1983. A French version had also been released under the title Firebird 2772. The film premiered on March 15, 1980 in Japan.
Synopsis
Au XXVIII siècle, la Terre ainsi que la plupart des mondes qu'elle a colonisés sont en déclin. Dans ce monde futuriste, un enfant reçoit pour cadeau d'anniversaire un androïde-nounou qui le suivra constamment. Une fois devenu adulte, il intègre la Space Academy et part à l'aventure dans l'univers connu, rencontrant différentes race extraterrestres, certaines amies, d'autres ennemies. Son but est de retrouver le Phénix, une créature mythique aux propriétés énergétiques inouïes. Eu égard au courage et à la volonté dont il fait preuve lors de cette quête, le Phénix décide d'en savoir plus sur cet aventurier tenace et sur la race dont il fait partie. Ainsi, le Phénix décide d'habiter le corps de l'androïde qui l'accompagne toujours…Actors

After a global-scale nuclear war, the majority of earth's surface has become a wasteland, with most of the world's survivors fighting over the few uncontaminated food and water supplies. Kenshiro, the master of the deadly martial art Hokuto Shinken, is traveling with his fiancee Yuria (Julia in English version) when they are confronted by Ken's former friend Shin of the Nanto Seiken. After defeating Ken in combat, Shin engraves seven wounds on Ken's chest and leaves him for dead, taking Yuria with him. Ken's eldest brother Raoh, having witnessed the fight without intervening, returns to his dojo and challenges his Master Ryuken's decision to choose Ken as his successor over him. Raoh kills Ryuken and proclaims he will become the ruler of the new world.

On 16 July 1988, an orb of light destroys Tokyo and World War III begins. Thirty-one years later, in the city of Neo-Tokyo, Shotaro Kaneda has his bōsōzoku gang, the Capsules, battle their rival gang, the Clowns. While there, Kaneda's best friend, Tetsuo Shima, crashes his motorcycle into Takashi, an esper with psychic powers, who had fled from a secret government laboratory with help from a covert operative. Colonel Shikishima, assisted by another esper called Maseru, has Takashi escorted back to his original lodgings and Tetsuo is abducted. Prior to the events of the film, a scientist is ordered by his dictator to create a machine in the apparent name of progress. The Scientist uses his own intellect to create the B.R.A.I.N., a thinking robot. However, the dictator quickly seizes it and integrates it into the Fabrication Machine, an armature that can construct an army of war machines to destroy the dictator's enemies. Lacking a soul, the Fabrication Machine becomes corrupted and decides to exterminate almost all life on Earth. The Fabrication Machine reprograms the other war machines to turn against humans by using toxic gas and chemical weapons. On the verge of destruction, the Scientist uses alchemy to create nine homunculus-like rag dolls known as "Stitchpunks" using portions of his own soul via a talisman and dies upon finishing the last one.

Genetic engineering on trees was conducted at a research facility on the Moon to produce trees capable of growing in harsh, arid conditions. The trees gain consciousness, obliterating Earth's civilizations and destroying the Moon. Three hundred years later, Japan is a dystopia covered by the Forest, a huge expanse of sapient trees, and ruled by the tree-like Druids, which inhabit the planet and control the water supply of both trees and humans. Gwen is a young girl adopted by a nomad tribe in a desert post-apocalyptic world. In the desert, where only few animals, like ostriches or scorpions, can survive, a mysterious entity regularly drops gigantic replicas of everyday life objects from our world, such as bags, telephones, clocks and armchairs. The film begins with an introductory sequence involving the main characters and images from space and introducing many of the film's visual leitmotifs. These are motifs of virtually still images revealing the key elements of the film: Justine the bride in deep melancholy with birds falling behind her; of a lawn with trees and sundial with two different shadows; Pieter Breughel's Hunters in the Snow (often used as interpretation of an idealised nostalgia) burning; the non existent 19th hole (limbo) and the Black Horse collapsing catastrophically in slow motion (Id, ego and super-ego battle); Justine as a bride being swept along by a river; and her being held back by her wedding dress; and finally Justine and her nephew building their magic cave before the Earth crashes into Melancholia becoming one.
