Prancer is a 1989 family film starring Sam Elliott, Cloris Leachman and Rebecca Harrell and was directed by John D. Hancock. It is set in Three Oaks, Michigan, where town exteriors were filmed. Filming also occurred at the Old Republic House in New Carlisle, Indiana, La Porte, Indiana, and at Starved Rock State Park in Utica, Illinois.

The film was followed on November 20, 2001 by Prancer Returns, a direct-to-video sequel released by USA Home Entertainment for VHS and DVD. It was released on DVD by MGM Home Video with several repackagings in 2003 and 2004, and a new one on October 7th, 2014.

Synopsis

Jessica Riggs (Rebecca Harrell), an 8-year-old girl whose mother has recently died from an unknown illness, is being raised with her older brother, Steve (John Duda), by their father, John (Sam Elliott), whose apple farm has fallen on hard times. Jessica loves everything to do with Christmas and listens to her Christmas records all year long. She continues to remember her mother and comforts herself with the thought that she is in Heaven. John is being temporarily helped with the kids by his sister-in-law, Sarah (Rutanya Alda).

The story of the film is based on an old legend, that Santa Claus (or God in the original legend) gives animals the ability to speak on Christmas. The film takes place in a fictional rural farming community named Twobridge somewhere in Tennessee, where a young calf named Annabelle is born on Christmas Eve. Upon meeting Santa Claus, she becomes fascinated with reindeer and their ability to fly, and wishes to fly herself. At the same time, having been granted the temporary ability to speak, she befriends her farmer's grandson, Billy, who suffered from muteness due to a terrible fire at Annabelle's barn one night. Throughout the course of the year, they learn the true value of friendship and learn that with faith and a willingness to overcome great odds, anybody can achieve their dreams. Once Annabelle loses her ability to talk, the ability is permanently given to Billy, who later finds out. At the end of the movie, when Billy's a grown man and is now in love with and married to his childhood friend, Emily, Santa Claus grants Annabelle's wish of flying by turning her into one of his reindeer, returning her ability to speak in the process.

The film begins in a Kingdom of Trolls, where Stanley (Dom DeLuise) has a magical green thumb with the ability to bring flowers and plants to life at a touch. When he is discovered doing so, the other trolls take him as prisoner to Gnorga (Cloris Leachman), the Queen of the Trolls, who concludes that Stanley "gives a bad name to trolls everywhere" and demands that he be turned to stone. At the behest of her consort King Llort (Charles Nelson Reilly), Gnorga instead banishes Stanley to Central Park where, after a series of mishaps, Stanley hides himself under a bridge. In New York City, two young siblings named Gus and Rosie (Phillip Glasser and Tawny Sunshine Glover) learn that their father Alan (Jonathan Pryce) and mother Hilary (Hayley Mills) cannot take them to Central Park. while left alone with their nanny, Maria, Gus takes Rosie to the Park himself. While playing with Gus's toy boat, which is later accidentally smashed, Rosie befriends Stanley. When Queen Gnorga discovers Stanley happy in exile, she creates a flood to drown them by making Gus cry, but Stanley enlarges Gus's toy boat to escape. Soon after, Stanley shows the children his own ideals, depicted as a world of his own.
