Rainbow Drive is a thriller television film starring Peter Weller, Sela Ward and David Caruso. It was directed by Bobby Roth. The film first aired on September 8, 1990 on the Showtime Cable Network.

The film is based on the 1986 novel of the same name by Roderick Thorp.

Synopsis

Mike Gallagher is one of Los Angeles' top cops, who is acting head of Hollywood's homicide division. But Gallagher is soon wrenched out of his orderly existence into a dirty world of killing and corruption. Gallagher's affair with a married woman leads him to stumble across a vicious scene of multiple murder on L.A. highway Rainbow Drive. Gallagher senses something strange when reinforcements arrive even before he has called them. When his superiors freeze him out of the case, Gallagher begins his own investigations. With the help of mysterious ally Laura Demming, Gallagher draws closer to the truth, and danger moves closer to his partner and mistress. His investigation propels him into a web of drugs and vice, corruption and cover-up - an intricate web that implicates some of the city's most senior figures.

Fourteen year old Elizabeth Smart is part of a large and loving Mormon family. Her father, Ed hires a handyman, a self-styled prophet named Emmanuel, to help him with a remodeling job. Months later, Emmanuel returns and kidnaps Elizabeth one night at knifepoint. Her sister, Mary Katherine, who is in the bed with her, is too terrified to immediately tell her parents. Once she does a massive police investigation begins. The Smarts are angered when the investigation questions whether any family members are involved in Elizabeth’s disappearance. A massive search effort begins and the story causes a media frenzy. After a false news story that the police suspect a family member, Ed takes and passes a polygraph test. Richard Ricci, who worked for the Smarts until he was fired when jewelry went missing, is arrested for a parole violation and the police think suspect his involvement in Elizabeth's disappearance. Emmanuel subsequently tries to kidnap one of Elizabeth's cousins, but is unsuccessful. The Smarts learn Ricci has had an aneurysm and is now brain dead. After this the Mom gives up hope, the story fades into the background and the police stop looking for Elizabeth. At one point, Mary Katherine realizes that it was Emmanuel who took Elizabeth, but the police do not pursue this lead. Ed appears on the TV show America's Most Wanted and tells host John Walsh in confidence about this new information. When Walsh reveals it on Larry King Live, the Smarts publish a sketch of Emmanuel, who is later identified as Brian David Mitchell. After having taken her to San Diego, Mitchell returns to Salt Lake City with his wife and Elizabeth. When the police accidentally come across the three of them and question them, Elizabeth identifies herself, resulting in Mitchell's arrest and Elizabeth's reunion with her family.

During the holiday season, Bethlehem School goes under review by a stern school administrator Cal Peterson (Gerald McRaney), sent to eliminate programs to save money and the school itself. Following long review, Cal decides to eliminate the music program led by music teacher Lily Waite (Naomi Judd). Cal is unaware that his teenage niece Fern (Alison Pill), whom he has been taking care of, has been changed by the music program. At the final concert, before Lily must leave her job, the music program is saved by generous donations, and Cal sees Fern perform. There are many sub-plots, including the hijinks of Jake Peterson (Andy Griffith). With a musical back ground, this film is unique in itself, it reaches out to the viewer not only through acting but through the joy of Christmas music, showing tradition in a new light, and showing that you are only as old as you feel.
