Rebel in Town is a 1956 American black-and-white Western film directed by Alfred L. Werker and starring John Payne, Ruth Roman, J. Carrol Naish and Ben Cooper. It contains stylistic elements of film noir.

Synopsis

Home from the Civil War, where he fought for the Union army, John Willoughby now lives in the western town of Kittreck Wells with wife Nora and their 7-year-old son, Petey. An appeal for help from Marshal Russell comes when a band of former Confederate soldiers are seen pulling a robbery in a neighboring town. John, who hates all rebels, agrees to go, against his wife's wishes that all his fighting must end.

"Tough Luck" Baxter et "Happy Jack" Clarke, deux prospecteurs, décident de retourner à Baxter City, une ville devenue fantôme quand l'or y a fait défaut. Dans le même temps, "Firefly", une danseuse de music-hall new-yorkaise au chômage, est envoyée à Baxter City par son profiteur de mari Bert Wilcox pour s'y produire. Dès son arrivée dans la ville déserte, elle décide d'en partir. Perdue dans le désert, elle est secourue par Danny Ward, un ancien athlète, qui la ramène à Baxter City. Se retrouvant ensemble, Tough Luck, Clarke, Danny et Firefly s'organisent et finissent par trouver de l'or. Danny, amoureux de Firefly, lui propose de l'épouser, mais le même soir son mari arrive en ville. Wilcox tente de voler l'or, il est attrapé et jeté hors de la ville. Par loyauté, Firefly l'accompagne. Danny les suit et trouve Firefly, abandonnée dans le désert par Wilcox après qu'il lui a volé son argent et son eau. Justice est rendue quand Wilcox meurt après avoir été mordu par des serpents à sonnette. Firefly peut alors revenir à Baxter City avec Danny.

When the anxiously awaited posse returns with neither prisoners nor the stolen money, we learn through flashbacks from three different characters, what took place. Having been cheated by Sampson Drune, a father and his two sons have robbed him and fled. A posse led by Drune took off after them and although unwanted, the town's drunken Sheriff joined them. The Sheriff's influence on Jed, the adopted son of Drune, is the key to Jed later revealing who killed Drune, the robbers, and what happened to the money.
