The film was well received at the prestigious Toronto Film Festival, but deemed a cable and direct-to-video product by Columbia Tri-Star, which owned the North American rights. When Bill Banning, the owner of a San Francisco movie theater and a huge fan of the film, arranged for a theatrical release, the film gained a "buzz" and toured the U.S. as an art-house hit.
Synopsis
Michael Williams (Nicolas Cage) is a drifter living out of his car after being discharged from the Marine Corps. A job on an oilfield falls through due to his unwillingness to conceal a war injury on his job application, so Michael wanders into rural Red Rock, Wyoming, looking for other work.Actors

The film opens in New York City, where Bridget works as a telemarketing manager and her husband Clay is training to be a doctor. He is heavily in debt to a loan shark so he arranges to sell stolen pharmaceutical cocaine to two drug dealers. The transaction becomes tense when the buyers pull a gun, but rather to Clay's surprise, they eventually pay him $700,000. Clay is left shaken, and on his return home he slaps Bridget after she insults him. She then steals the cash from him and flees their apartment while he is in the shower.

At the start of the summer holiday, Lewis Thomas (Paul Walker) and his childhood friend Venna Wilcox (Leelee Sobieski), who study at different universities, are both packing to go back home. In an attempt to get Venna romantically interested in him, Lewis offers to come by Venna's campus to drive her home instead of both of them flying back. Venna happily agrees and, after buying a car, Lewis starts his road-trip. When he calls his parents during the trip he learns his brother Fuller (Steve Zahn) has managed to once again get arrested, this time in Salt Lake City. Since Salt Lake City is not that far, Lewis decides that, prior to picking up Venna, he will visit Fuller, whom he hasn't seen in five years. After bailing him out, Fuller decides to accompany Lewis on his trip and, during the ride, coaxes Lewis into playing a cruel prank through their CB Radio on a truck driver, known only as 'Rusty Nail' (voiced by Ted Levine (uncredited)). Lewis pretends to be an attractive young woman named Candy Cane and sets up a meeting with Rusty Nail in the motel where Lewis and Fuller will be spending the night. But instead of giving Rusty his own room number, Lewis gives him the number of the room next door, which belongs to a highly irritable businessman who had an argument with Fuller earlier that night. When the joke takes a deadly turn, Lewis and Fuller find themselves being relentlessly stalked by the psychotic Rusty Nail. Needing gas, Lewis and Fuller stop at a gas station but are shocked when an ice truck follows them into the gas station. Convinced the truck driver must be Rusty Nail, Lewis and Fuller flee in panic only to discover they are being chased by the ice truck driver. However, it turns out the truck driver is merely trying to return Lewis' credit card which he left behind at the gas station. As the ice truck drives away, the real Rusty Nail in his truck ploughs through the ice truck, killing the innocent truck driver. He then proceeds to run over and crush the Lewis and Fuller's car, taunting them. Once the two apologize, Rusty accepts, and leaves.

Frank Falenczyk (Ben Kingsley) is a hit man for his Polish mob family in Buffalo, New York. He has a drinking problem, and when he messes up a critical assignment that puts the family business in peril, his uncle Roman Krzeminski (Philip Baker Hall), head of the family, sends him to San Francisco to clean up his act. Set in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the film begins in a diner called Bennys Billiards, where local tough guy Rusty James is told by Midget that rival group leader Biff Wilcox wants to meet him that night in an abandoned garage lot for a fight. Karl Childers (Billy Bob Thornton) is a mentally disabled Arkansas man who has been in the custody of the state mental hospital since the age of 12 for having killed his mother and her lover. Although thoroughly "institutionalized," Karl is deemed fit to be released into the outside world. Prior to his release, he is interviewed by a local college newspaper reporter, to whom he recounts the brutal murder of his mother and her boyfriend with a Kaiser blade - during which scene he notes to the reporter that, "Some folks call it a sling blade. I call it a kaiser blade," the line from which the film derives its name. Karl continues, saying that he killed the man because he thought he was raping his mother. When he discovered that his mother was a willing participant in the affair, he killed her too.
