Sam Kellog (John Saxon) is an ex-cop who works as a modern day bounty hunter in Los Angeles. He works for bailbondsman Bill Schwartz (Keenan Wynn) and is assigned to bring in ex-convicts and criminals who have skipped bail. Kellog is frustrated over the low amount of money he receives from his jobs. Recently divorced, Kellog's ex-wife is threatening to end weekend visitation rights to their young daughter over missing several alimony payments. One day, Kellog is offered a large, off-the-book $20,000 bounty by his former police commander, Lt. Kruger (Howard Honig) to bring in an ex-covict named Victor Hale (Roosevelt Grier) who is suspected in the murders of various former prison guards in the L.A. area. Hale was brutalized in prison by the guards who used a five-pound, leather-covered, steel glove called the 'riot glove' and has been using a copy of it to murder the prison guards who used to beat him with it. Kellog takes the job, aware that the 20 grand reward will solve all of his financial problems.

Joanna Eberhart is a young wife who moves with her husband Walter (Peter Masterson) and two children from New York City to the idyllic Connecticut suburb of Stepford. Maggie et Pete sont un couple de décorateurs d'intérieur en Californie. Ils sont sollicités par un mystérieux client britannique mais ils refusent d'abord de s'éloigner de leur pays natal. Après avoir accepté de se rendre chez lui en Angleterre, ils sont victimes d'un accident de voiture dans la campagne anglaise. L'autre véhicule impliquée dans la collision n'est d'autre que la limousine de leur bienfaiteur millionaire, Jason Mountolive. Celui-ci les invite dans son château dans lequel ils sont aussitôt rejoints par cinq autres personnes, venues pour la lecture du testament de Mountolive. En effet, celui-ci est mourant et compte leur dévoiler son héritage. Intriguée par son changement de santé, Maggie se rend à son chevet et Jason lui offre un anneau qu'elle ne peut pas enlever de son doigt, un joyau que possèdent tous les autres invités. Très vite, ils meurent accidentellement les uns après les autres dans des circonstances atroces. Maggie découvre qu'elle n'est pas dans le château par hasard mais qu'elle a un lien avec la famille Mountolive, dont le père de Jason a été brûlé vif avec son épouse, Margaret Walsingham, car ils ont été accusés d'hérésie et de sorcellerie. Elle apprend que les autres héritiers morts ont tous été impliqués dans des crimes ou des scandales mais ils ont été blanchis grâce à Jason. Maggie est l'arrière-petite-fille de ce dernier.

A successful mentalist, Arthur Sinclair (Hal Holbrook), preys upon wealthy socialites such as Helen Carrington (Eve McVeagh) for their money. The film opens as Sinclair is talking on the phone with his much younger wife Allison (Katharine Ross). She wishes him luck as he departs to give an interview. But she is in fact in bed with another man Gil (Barry Bostwick). Gil is a trying actor in love with Allison and we soon learn that she is planning to have Gil kill Arthur by scaring him to death (as he has a heart problem). Their plan is to have Gil storm the house pretending to be a burglar and then point a gun at Arthur who would die from the shock. The night comes and Gil storms the house but Arthur sees him before he can reach the gun. Gil presents himself as a journalist there to make an interview with Arthur. He and Gil have a hearty conversation and it turns out that both men have something on each other. Gil knows that Arthur is a fake and that he somehow knew the information about a killer in a different town and Arthur knows that Gil is not a journalist. Gil is not panicked by that and he uses Arthur's competitive behavior to make him do 50 push-ups which tires Arthur's heart. Soon Gil draws the gun, the two men struggle, and Arthur apparently shoots Gil. When Allison comes home, he is distraught by the incident; then Gil (who loaded a blank bullet into the gun) comes behind him, and Arthur stumbles across the house and screams in pain ... then laughs and applauds as the two lovers look on. He knew about Gil and Allison for a long time and now he is out to get them, but suddenly Arthur's lawyer and best friend George (Richard Anderson) comes in the house and it turns out that he is Allison's real lover and Gil was just there to do the dirty work. George shoots Arthur, then he and Allison depart. Some time afterwords Allison returns to the house and finds Arthur's body gone. It turns out that Arthur knew about George too. Arthur points the gun at Allison and she asks him what is he going to do to which he replies: "Why don't you read my mind".

Maggie Walsh (Ross) and her boyfriend Pete Danner (Elliott) are interior decorators from California. They are retained by an anonymous British client. Their reluctance to abandon their current client in Los Angeles is alleviated when that client dies suddenly in mysterious circumstances. Taking advantage of their pre-paid airfare, they travel to England and are immediately involved in a traffic collision with a limousine. The passenger reveals himself as their mysterious benefactor, Jason Mountolive (Standing), who invites them to his rambling estate, Ravenhurst.

Benjamin Braddock, aged twenty, has earned his bachelor's degree and has returned home to a party celebrating his graduation at his parents' house in Pasadena, California. Benjamin initially rebuffs her, but after a few days, he clumsily organizes a tryst at the Taft hotel.
