Synopsis
The portrays the corrupt administration an Apulia town during the Fascist regime in 1937, after it has been informed, in a roundabout manner, of the visit (in disguise) of a Government inspector from Rome who has the intention of verifying if everything went according to the strict established guidelines for official economic and social planning.Actors

En 1944, dans un village italien qui pourrait s'imaginer épargné par la guerre, un fermier, l'oncle Tigna, héberge en cachette deux soldats américains. L'un d'eux, un Noir, est grièvement blessé. Un médecin soignera le blessé. Bientôt rétabli, le G. I. fait la fête, mais le seul Allemand du village, un caporal en faction, arrive à l'improviste chez l'oncle Tigna. En dépit des précautions prises par les villageois, les deux hommes finissent par se retrouver face-à-face. Totalement éméchés, les soldats ennemis fraternisent. Les habitants de la petite commune croient la guerre finie et la paix installée. Mais une patrouille allemande arrive juste avant la venue imminente des Américains et l'oncle Tigna sera abattu.

The Magnificent Cuckold is about a hat tycoon who is ecstatically, if not hungrily, in love with his youthful wife. It is all blissful, that is, until our man, middle-aged and somewhat of a square among his blasé, upper-class friends to whom cuckoldry is a common practice, is seduced by one of them. At this point doubts and suspicions, like conscience, begin to plague him. If he could succumb to extramarital confections, why not his gorgeous mate? Quickly his love for his spouse degenerates beyond obsessive, into the realm of maniacal. He becomes madly concerned that his wife is cheating on him --even though she is not being unfaithful. When he looks at her it becomes obvious to him that she is a very attractive woman. And, all the men around her must be dying to be with her. Gnawed by jealously, he will imagine variations on nabbing her and her lover red-handed.

The story starts in a small [albeit unnamed] town, simply known as "a small world", in the Po lowlands of northern Italy, in the early summer of 1946. The town's Communist party led by Peppone has just won the majority of seats within the city council, an event which they exploit for propagandistic purposes – and with some non-vocal, but church bell-assisted protest by the outraged Don Camillo, the spiritual leader of the town's Christian political party –, when an unexpected event puts an instant stop to this arising conflict: Peppone has just added a new member, a son, to his family, and following a personal and pugilistic appeal by Peppone himself (as well as some admonishment from Christ) to a reluctant Don Camillo, the child is baptized in Camillo's church. Similar conflicts arising in the course of the story are settled between Don Camillo and Peppone in a similarly conflicting, but ultimately unified fashion, such as:

After receiving a tractor as a gift from the kolkhoz of an unnamed Soviet village, communist mayor Peppone plans to twin Brescello with the unnamed town. After some failed attempts to block the major's plan, Don Camillo ultimately tricks Peppone into including him (under a false name and with forged papers) among the Italian communist representatives going on the other side of the iron curtain to attend the twinning ceremonies. Only Peppone and the other comrades from Brescello will know the priest's real identity. During the Russian stay they will face a series of situations that will show them both the political contradictions of Soviet Russia and the normal life of its common people.
