Synopsis
Le planteur anglais du Brésil, Robinson Crusoé, embarque sur le « Santa Lucia » à destination des côtes de Guinée où il entend se lancer dans la traite des nègres. Au large de Saint-Domingue, il est obligé d’embarquer, sous la menace d’un révolver, sur un canot de sauvetage par le capitaine du navire qu’il a tenté d’empêcher de faire escale pour vendre quelques esclaves. Une tempête pousse Robinson vers une île au large du Venezuela ainsi que la Santa Lucia dont il ne reste aucun survivant. Après avoir sauvegardé tous les biens du navire, Robinson vit seul pendant des années jusqu’à l’arrivée inattendue de cannibales venus sacrifier un prisonnier. Robinson les met en fuite et entame une nouvelle vie avec le rescapé qu’il nomme « Vendredi ». Robinson tente également d’enseigner ses propres valeurs morales et religieuses à Vendredi qui se montre réfractaire. Finalement les deux hommes parviendront pourtant à transcender leurs cultures respectives pour établir une vraie communication.Actors

La Chèvre features Depardieu as the tough-guy private detective Campana, hired to find Marie, the daughter of a rich businessman, who has mysteriously disappeared while vacationing in Mexico. Réda (Nicolas Cazalé) is a French-Moroccan teenager due to sit for Baccalauréat. When his devout father (played by Mohamed Majd) asks Réda to accompany him on a pilgrimage to Mecca, he reluctantly agrees. However, the father insists that they travel by car. As both embark on a road trip thousands of kilometres away from southern France, the once-icy father-and-son relationship starts to thaw as both gradually come to know each other. Réda speaks only in French to his father, who is seen speaking only Arabic for the majority of the film. Later, when necessary, the father proves that he in fact speaks impeccable French; his choice to speak only Arabic to his son is therefore purposeful.

During World War II, Navy Lt. Cmdr. John Lawrence (Richard Widmark), a strict disciplinarian, is put in charge of Underwater Demolition Team 4 after its former leader, Lt. Cmdr. Jack Cassidy, is killed in action. The unit's men are distrustful of the professionally aloof Lawrence, and the relationship immediately takes a turn for the worse when they brawl with sailors aboard their transport ship. The ship's captain, Lt. Cmdr. Pete Vincent (Gary Merrill), understands the natural resentment the elite UDT men feel over the death of Cassidy, which they have transferred to Lawrence, and offers to go easy on the team at captain's mast. The "by-the-book" Lawrence, however, elects to hold his own mast and disciplines the entire team just before a dangerous reconnaissance mission to ascertain the safest landing beach during an upcoming invasion of a Japanese-held island. Lawrence is scornfully perceived as afraid when he splits up the platoon and puts team executive officer Lt. Klinger in charge of a diversion to the more dangerous beach, where the main landing is scheduled.
