It was based on the best-selling 1915 novel by Harry Leon Wilson, adapted by Humphrey Pearson and with a screenplay by Walter DeLeon and Harlan Thompson. It is the story of a newly rich American couple from the West who win a British gentleman's gentleman in a poker game.
Synopsis
In 1908 the Earl of Burnstead (Roland Young) gambles away his eminently correct English manservant, Marmaduke Ruggles (Charles Laughton). Ruggles' new masters, crude nouveau riche American millionaires Egbert and Effie Floud (Charlie Ruggles and Mary Boland), bring Ruggles back to Red Gap, Washington, a remote Western boomtown. When Ruggles is mistaken for a wealthy retired Englishman colonel, he becomes a celebrity in the small town. As Ruggles attempts to adjust to his rough new community, he learns to live life on his own terms, achieving a fulfilling independence as a result.Actors

Le film met en scène trois couples qui vont se croiser contre leur gré et dont les rencontres vont provoquer une série de catastrophes et de quiproquos. Le premier couple est formé des époux Whinney, la quarantaine, lui employé de banque, qui désire prendre 15 jours de vacances. Madame Whinney afin d'économiser sur le prix du voyage propose de prendre un autre couple en co-voiturage mais sans le dire à son mari. Le couple en question, Georges et Gracie est atypique, non marié, jeune, la fille simplette et extravagante, l'homme ronchon, et pour couronner le tout, ils sont accompagnés d'un énorme chien qui n'aime pas trop qu'on le contrarie. Fergusson, un collègue de Whinney trouve un stratagème afin que ce dernier emporte dans sa valise de l'argent qu'il a dérobé dans le coffre de la banque. Mais les excentricités de Gracie font que nos deux couples de vacanciers ont fait un détour improbable et ne se trouve pas à l’hôtel où ils devaient descendre et où le collègue devait récupérer les fonds. Finalement les deux couples après s'être fait détrousser de leur argent (mais pas de celui de la valise) et leurs bijoux par des bandits de grand chemins arrivent pour la nuit dans une petite ville de l’Ouest où nous découvrons le troisième couple, il s’agit du Shérif John Hoxley (W. C. Fields) et de son épouse qui gère l’hôtel. Sur place, Whinney télégraphie à la banque afin qu'on lui débloque des fonds pour payer leur nuit d'hôtel. La police qui le soupçonnait peut ainsi le localiser, mais également Fergusson. Après une série de quiproquos à répétition, Fergusson sera arrêté, Whinney blanchi, quant à Georges et Gracie ils retrouveront un autre couple de pigeons pour continuer leur route.

Katherine croit, sur la foi d'une de ses amies, que son mari Charley a une amante. Pendant ce temps, ce dernier, dans la grande maison où le couple vit avec un serviteur, reçoit un billet d'un ami qui lui demande d'héberger le professeur Brown. Il accepte sans voir ce professeur qui s'installe dans une chambre au-dessus du séjour. Sa femme rentre pour le dîner et montre ses soupçons à Charley. Or celui-ci se rend compte que le professeur Brown est en fait une jeune et charmante femme ; il demande alors à un cambrioleur, qui entre sans sa chambre juste à ce moment-là, de jouer le rôle du professeur. Le dîner se passe dans la plus grande gêne : le faux professeur n'a pas de bonnes manières et la femme de Charley est alertée par des bruits à l'étage. Dans la confusion qui s'ensuit, le faux professeur en profitera pour mettre toute l'argenterie dans un sac mais emportera en fait Mme Brown que Charley comptait lui-même évacuer dans un autre sac, et c’est l'amie médisante de Katherine, venant aux nouvelles, qui sera présentée par Charley comme l'auteur des bruits et, par la même occasion, la maîtresse du serviteur.

In the 19th century, a Grande Dame (Jeanne Moreau) summons The Brothers Grimm to her palace, where the brothers discuss their interpretation of the Cinderella story and notice a painting displayed in the room. The Grande Dame shows the brothers a glass slipper and tells them the story of Danielle de Barbarac, the true story of Cinderella. In 16th-century France, widower Auguste de Barbarac (Jeroen Krabbé), father of eight-year-old Danielle, marries Rodmilla de Ghent (Anjelica Huston), a wealthy baroness with two young daughters, Maguerite and Jacqueline, but he dies of a heart attack shortly afterwards. Before dying, Auguste's last words are directed to Danielle, which causes the Baroness to envy Danielle and treat her miserably for the next ten years. While Marguerite (Megan Dodds) is hostile and cruel to Danielle, Jacqueline (Melanie Lynskey) is kinder and more respectful to her, though she often stays out of the crossfires to keep the peace.

Jerry Warriner (Cary Grant) returns home from a trip, which he falsely says was to Florida, to find that his wife, Lucy (Irene Dunne), is not at home. Philippe Abrams is the manager of the postal service (La Poste) in Salon-de-Provence, Bouches-du-Rhône, in southern France. He is married to Julie, whose depressive character makes his life miserable. Philippe does everything to get a job at an office on the Mediterranean seaside to make her happy. As this favourable position will be granted to somebody who is disabled, Abrams decides to pretend that he is. However, the management finds out. As punishment, he is banished for two years to Bergues, a town near Dunkirk in northern France. Northern France – and the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region in particular – is considered "the sticks" – a cold and rainy place inhabited by unsophisticated ch'tis who speak a strange language (called "ch'ti" in local parlance, and "cheutimi" in the South). He has to spend his first night at Antoine's place, a co-worker of his. Philippe initially dislikes Antoine for his rude behaviour and because he thinks Antoine is gay (he found photographs of Antoine dressed as a woman, but they were taken during a carnival party). However, later in the film, Antoine and Philippe become best friends.

Klim Yarko rentre en Ukraine par le train après son service militaire effectué dans une unité blindée. Il avoue aux camarades qui voyagent avec lui ne pas savoir où s'installer, car sans famille il n'est attendu par personne. Il a toutefois une idée. Dans une gazette, il est tombé sur la photo de Mariana Bajan qui dirige une brigade de tractoristes dans un kolkhoze. Il se rend donc à ce kolkhoze à la tombée de la nuit. En chemin, il découvre Mariana qui vient de faire une chute de moto. Il lui porte secours et rentre avec elle au village. Les jeunes gens sympathisent. Klim en tant que bon mécanicien est très bien accueilli par le directeur du kolkhoze Kirill Petrovitch. Toutefois il ne sait pas que, pour repousser les prétendants à son cœur, Mariana avait demandé à l'un des kolkhoziens, un certain Nazar Douma, de se présenter comme son fiancé. Celui-ci prend son rôle très au sérieux et, un matin, essaye de chasser Klim comme les autres. Klim décide de partir, mais à la suite d'un concours de circonstances il devient brigadier de l'unité concurrente de Mariana et chef de Nazar. Nazar n'est pas bien noté par Kirill Petrovitch qui demande à Klim d'améliorer la discipline et le rendement de sa brigade, pour que le fiancé de Mariana devienne un kolkhozien modèle digne de la main de leur meilleure travailleuse. Klim réussit cette mission, mais alors que Kirill Petrovitch évoque dans son bureau la préparation du mariage, il envoie valser les meubles et se met à hurler que ni Nazar ni aucun autre ne se mettra entre lui et sa bien-aimée. Kirill Petrovitch n'en paraît nullement perturbé, il est prêt à donner sa bénédiction à tous les amoureux pourvu qu'ils soient de parfaits tractoristes. Le film se termine par la scène du grand mariage où tout le monde chante des chansons patriotiques et lève son verre vers le portrait du camarade Staline.

The film begins with a day nearing end. Rachel, the daughter in the first family, is shown working in a nursing home. Phil, her father, is shown driving people around in his minicab. Penny, Rachel's mother, is shown working as a cashier at Safeway store alongside Maureen, the mother in the second family. When Penny leaves work, she cycles home to find her eighteen-year-old son Rory in a fight with a local boy for taking his football. Rory is a lazy, obese, ill-mannered teenager who stays home all day and doesn't work. Complications with Rory's obesity arise when after an altercation with a gang of youths playing "Piggy in the Middle", he ultimately runs out of breath, begins to hyperventilate and is hospitalised after suffering a heart attack.
