Secondo Ponzio Pilato is a 1987 Italian historical comedy-drama film written and directed by Luigi Magni. The film continues the Magni's path of ironic reinterpretation of the history. It was filmed between Syracuse, Algeria and Tunisia. For her performance in this film Stefania Sandrelli was nominated to the Silver Ribbon for Best Actress.

Synopsis

The Roman tribune Pontius Pilate then runs Jesus Christ and then, never mind, allows Christ to be executed after being scourged. Crucified and dead, Jesus Christ promises to the faithful that would be resurrected three days after his earthly death. From this point Pontius Pilate begins to be opposed and hated by the Roman people that he realizes his mistake and that the Jews, who in turn are severely punished by the Emperor Tiberius.

Rome, 1825. Cornacchia, a shoemaker, finds out that prince Filippo Spada, a Carbonari associate, is going to reveal the organization's plans for an uprising to the Pontifical Guard's commander, Colonel Nardoni. He then goes off to warn his friend Leonida Montanari, a doctor and head of the conspirators, who decides to take out the informer. He and Angelo Targhini, a newcomer from the Duchy of Modena, attempt to murder Spada but ultimately fail to deliver the final blow. Spada manages to survive the attack and report his assailants to the police, having them both arrested and subsequently, after a summary judgement, sentenced to death by Cardinal Rivarola.
