Synopsis
Un petit village corse perdu dans le maquis. 150 habitants. Pour sa survie, le village et tout le canton compte sur la signature d'un contrat pour la construction d'un grand complexe théâtral par le maire Ange Michelangeli (René Jauneau) avec le ministre. Un contrat censé apporter « vie, école et brigade de Gendarmerie » au village. Mais le matin même du grand jour, Ange fait un infarctus à cause de l'alcool. Toute la famille le croit alors mort. Pas le choix ! Pour ne pas compromettre la signature du contrat, réellement indispensable à la survie de ce canton perdu, sa femme, la matriarche Lellè (Angèle Massei) va décider, en dépit de toutes les traditions corses de cacher la mort de son époux au village entier, et bien sûr au ministre. En reportant l'annonce « officielle » de la mort au lendemain, et en déguisant son fils Sauveur (Wladimir Yordanoff), gendarme de profession, en une parfaite réplique du défunt, et ce malgré l'opprobre de l'autre fils, le nationaliste et conservateur Rinatu (Pierre Laplace). S'ensuit une série de quiproquos et mensonges, les vieilles querelles entre membres de la famille ressurgissant soudainement. Et personne n'a songé à faire venir le médecin légiste pour s'assurer de la véritable mort d'Ange, lequel s'avéra en fait être bien vivant.Actors

Baby est chauffeur pour un gang de braqueurs à Atlanta. Enfant, il a survécu un accident de voiture au cours duquel ses parents sont tués, mais qui lui cause des acouphènes qu'il atténue avec la musique. Il travaille dorénavant pour Doc, le chef du gang, afin de rembourser une dette en compensation d'avoir volé une voiture. Entre deux jobs, il fait des remixes des conversations enregistrées et prend soin de son père adoptif atteint de surdité, Joseph. Un jour, il fait la rencontre de la jeune et jolie Debora, serveuse d'un diner, avec lequel il sympathise avant de commencer à sortir ensemble. Lors d'un nouveau « boulot » au cours duquel un témoin armé l'a poursuivi ainsi que la police avec le gang, avant de parvenir à s'échapper, Baby quitte le monde criminel après avoir payé sa dette auprès de Doc et devient livreur de pizzas. Alors qu'il a invité Debora au restaurant, Baby, pensant fuir un monde qui ne lui ressemble pas, a la désagréable surprise de voir Doc, qui interrompt leur dîner. Ce dernier contraint le jeune homme à participer à un autre coup en dévalisant un bureau de poste, sous peine de s'en prendre à Debora et Joseph.

In 1854, Edward Pierce (Sean Connery), to all appearances a charismatic and well-established member of London's high society, is secretly an opportunistic and cynical master thief. He plans to steal a shipment of gold (sent monthly to finance the Crimean War) travelling from London to Folkestone. The bank has taken strict precautions, including locking the gold in two heavy Chubb safes, each of which has two locks, requiring a total of four keys to open them. When a test robbery (using a hired stooge to test the security measures) goes awry, Pierce recruits his old acquaintance Robert Agar (Donald Sutherland), a pickpocket and screwsman. Pierce's mistress Miriam (Lesley-Anne Down), a beautiful actress, and his driver Barlow (George Downing) join the plot, and the guard to the safe car, Burgess (Michael Elphick), is also bribed into participation. Pierce plans the robbery in exquisite detail, and procures information on the security measures and locations of the keys. The executives of the bank who store the gold and arrange its transport, Mr. Henry Fowler and Mr. Edgar Trent, each possess a key; the other two are locked in a cabinet at the offices of the South Eastern Railway at the London Bridge train station. The keys are not to be stolen, but wax impressions are to be made of them in order to hide the robbers' intentions.

Henry Holland (Alec Guinness) is dining with a fellow Englishman in a posh restaurant in Rio de Janeiro where he is well known. He relates a story explaining his presence in Rio. It seems he was a seemingly unambitious London bank clerk in charge of gold bullion deliveries for over 20 years. He had a reputation for fussing over details and suspecting all cars he observed following the bullion van, but all in all appeared to be a man dedicated to his job and the gold's security. In fact, he had hatched the "perfect" plot to steal a load of bullion and retire. The one thing stopping him had been that selling the gold on the black market in Britain was too risky, and he was at a loss as to how to smuggle it abroad.
