Synopsis
Aurélien Bouvier, dit « Mouton », est un jeune un peu simple qui n'a pour seule famille qu'une poignée d'amis. Il travaille comme cuisinier dans un restaurant de bord de mer, à Courseulles. Un soir de Fête de la Sainte Anne, un homme l'agresse sans raison en lui tronçonnant le bras.Comments

Set in 19th-century New England, the story follows the whaling ship Pequod and its crew. Leading them is Captain Ahab, who was almost killed in an encounter with the "great white whale", Moby Dick. The film opens with a boy crab fishing. We then observe three fishermen landing a flimsy holed curragh in the force of the wind and the huge waves. Next we see some of the hardships of mundane Aran life: making a field on the barren rocks using seaweed and soil scraped out of rock crevices, fixing holes in the boat with a mixture of cloth and tar, rendering the liver of the giant basking shark. The film follows as the men of Aran harpoon the huge beasts from their bád iomartha (a wooden carvel hulled craft), the film ends with another storm sequence where the distressed family on shore watch the prolonged struggle of the boat to land safely against the elements.

Amélie, a young Belgian woman (played by Sylvie Testud), having spent her childhood in Japan, decides to return to live there and tries to integrate into Japanese society. She is determined to be a "real Japanese" before her year contract runs out, though it is precisely this determination that is incompatible with Japanese humility. Though she is hired for a choice position as a translator at an import/export firm, her inability to understand Japanese cultural norms results in increasingly humiliating demotions. Though Amelie secretly adulates her immediate supervisor, Ms Mori (Kaori Tsuji), the latter takes sadistic pleasure in belittling Amelie. Mori finally manages to break Amelie's will by making her the bathroom attendant, and is delighted when Amelie tells her that she will not renew her contract. Amelie realizes that she is finally a real Japanese when she enters the company president's office "with fear and trembling," which was possible only because her determination had been broken by Mori's systematic humiliation.

The film opens in documentary fashion at a Sardinian elementary school that six-year-old Gavino (Saverio Marconi) is attending. In October 1991, the commercial fishing boat Andrea Gail returns to port in Gloucester, Massachusetts, with a poor catch. Desperate for money, Captain Billy Tyne (Clooney), convinces the Andrea Gail crew to join him for one more late season fishing expedition. The crew heads out past their usual fishing grounds in the Grand Banks, leaving a developing thunderstorm behind them. Initially unsuccessful, they head to the Flemish Cap, where their luck improves. At the height of their fishing the ice machine breaks; the only way to sell their catch before it spoils is to hurry back to shore. After debating whether to sail through the building storm or to wait it out, the crew decides to risk the storm. However, between the Andrea Gail and Gloucester is a confluence of two powerful weather fronts and a hurricane, which the Andrea Gail crew underestimates.

Après deux années passées sur le continent, Salvatore retourne dans sa Sicile natale. Alors qu'il rêve d'être accueilli en fils prodigue, il constate que les habitants de son village l'attendent, plutôt impatiemment, afin d'y dénouer un conflit d'ordre social. La question cruciale est celle-ci : faut-il occuper les domaines que la récente loi a expropriés et partagés et que la Mafia empêche qu'on leur distribue ? Les paysans entament une action pacifique, mais Salvatore veut aller plus loin : en labourant et semant, ils doivent provoquer une situation irréversible. Les paysans se mettent au travail, mais la Mafia les attaque à l'aube. Les carabiniers interviennent alors pour empêcher les combats. Ne s'avouant pas vaincue, la Mafia entreprend de contrôler l'affermage des carrières du voisinage. Simultanément, elle cherche à gagner à sa cause Salvatore, en l'achetant si nécessaire. Bien qu'il feigne d'accepter la négociation, Salvatore engage une campagne pour améliorer les conditions de travail dans les carrières. Un matin, Salvatore s'en prend violemment au chef local de la Mafia : celle-ci le liquide physiquement, une heure après. Le village entier, lui rendant hommage, assiste à ses funérailles.
