When a flying saucer lands in Washington, D.C., the U. S. Army quickly encircles the spaceship. A humanoid (Michael Rennie) emerges, announcing that he has come in peace. As he advances, he unexpectedly opens a small cylindrical device and is shot by a nervous soldier who thinks it's a weapon. A tall robot emerges from the saucer and quickly disintegrates the army's deployed weapons with an energy ray. The alien orders the robot, Gort, to stop. He explains that the broken device was a gift for the President, which would have enabled him "to study life on the other planets".

Cowboy drifter Jim Garry is summoned by his friend, smooth-talking Tate Riling. Steve Hasting est détective dans une société d'assurance. Il est chargé d’enquêter à la suite de la disparition mystérieuse d'un de ses collègues qui enquêtait au Mexique à propos d'un bijou disparu. On ne sait au départ si le collègue est complice ou victime. La sœur du collègue, Victoria Ames, doit justement se rendre au Mexique, Hasting est donc chargé de l'approcher. On apprend qu'elle a rendez-vous avec son frère à la sortie de l'aéroport, mais ce dernier n'y est pas. En fait une bande de trafiquants de bijoux possédant une boite de nuit à Mexico se sert de Victoria comme appât, persuadés qu'elle les mettra sur la piste de son frère et donc du bijou. C'est d'ailleurs ce qui se passe, le frère a été gravement blessé et est abrité chez une famille de paysans. Hasting et Victoria sont bientôt maîtrisés par les gangsters, mais Hasting réussira à les piéger et l'intervention de la police mettra fin à l'affaire.

In the autumn of 1864, remnants of the Confederate 5th Georgia Cavalry are prisoners of war in the Union prison camp at Rock Island, Illinois. Sick and dying in deplorable conditions, they find a chance for survival when Union Captain Mark Bradford (Cornel Wilde) offers them release from "this stinking pesthole" if they will join the Union Army to garrison a fort on the western frontier, undermanned because its able-bodied regulars have been sent east, leaving only "greenhorns or casualties" like Bradford to fight Indians. Although promised that they will not be compelled to fight against their own, many of the Georgians resist the offer. Putting the decision to a vote, the issue is deadlocked when the last soldier dies before he can choose. Compassion for his men, and Bradford's sincerity, compels their reluctant commander, Col. Clay Tucker (Joseph Cotten) to break the tie by agreeing to the conditions offered.

Viktoria Kowalska (Valentina Cortese) has lost her home and her husband in the German occupation of Poland, and has been imprisoned in the concentration camp at Belsen. She befriends another prisoner, Karin Dernakova (Natasha Lytess), who dreams of reuniting with her young son Christopher (Gordon Gebert), who was sent to live in San Francisco with a wealthy Aunt. Karin dies shortly before the camp can be liberated, and Viktoria, seeing a way to a better life, uses Karin's papers to assume her identity. After the camp is liberated, she is interviewed by Major Marc Bennett (William Lundigan), who gets her a place in a camp for persons displaced by the war. She writes to Karin's Aunt Sophia in San Francisco, but receives a cable from Sophia's lawyers that she has died.
