Sound City is a 2013 documentary film produced and directed by Dave Grohl, in his directorial debut, about the history of recording studio Sound City Studios in Van Nuys, Los Angeles.
Synopsis
Sound City Studios was located in the San Fernando Valley, amidst rows of dilapidated warehouses. The little-known recording studio housed a unique analog Neve recording console and a reputation for recording drums. Artists such as Red Hot Chili Peppers, Fleetwood Mac, Neil Young, Rick Springfield, Tom Petty, Kyuss, Slipknot and Nirvana recorded groundbreaking music at the studio. The film tells the story of the studio from its early days in 1969 until its closing in 2011. It then follows Dave Grohl's purchase of the studio's custom analog Neve console, which he moved to his personal studio, Studio 606. Rupert Neve is an English engineer who founded Neve Electronics in 1961, designed and manufactured the Neve 8028, "one of four in the world", and is interviewed by Grohl in the film. Famous musicians who recorded at Sound City reunite at Studio 606 for a jam session and to make an album of "all-new all-original songs, each one composed and recorded exclusively for the film within its own 24-hour session on that console." It also shows album covers by some bands: Red Hot Chili Peppers's One Hot Minute, Nirvana's Incesticide and Nevermind, Rage Against The Machine's self-titled album and many others.Actors

After Don Cobain marries Wendy O'Conner, she gets pregnant and gives birth to their son Kurt Cobain. He is a hyperactive kid and at the age of three, his sister Kim is born. At the age of nine his parents divorce and he goes to stay with his dad. Don tells Kurt that he wouldn't get married again, but breaks his promise when he meets Jenny Westeby who already has two kids. They get married and have another kid Chad. Kurt tortures his siblings and Jenny has Don kick him out. Kurt goes to stay with his mom and his sister. He starts hanging out with a few kids he hates but hangs out with them so he can smoke marijuana. They go over to a girls house where they distract her and one of them grabs alcohol from the basement. They get away with this for only a month, and during that month Kurt gets suicidal. He decides that before he kills himself he wants to have sex first. He goes over to the girls house and when they are about to have sex, he leaves after being grossed out by how her vagina smelled. After a conversation with Buzz Osborne, he starts listening to punk rock. Two weeks before school gets out, he drops out due to lack of credits. He decides to make a band and meets Krist Novoselic. They form their band with Chad Channing on drums. After going through many names, they call the band Nirvana.

The Cry of Jazz is set in Chicago at the meeting of a jazz appreciation club of musicians and intellectuals, both Black and White. It is broken up into seven parts. Parts one, three, five, and seven center around conversations between the jazz club members. Parts two, four, and six are done in a documentary style and utilize footage of life in Chicago as well as of Sun Ra’s band performing the music. Alex, the film’s main character, serves as narrator during these sections. Although the film is nominally about jazz, jazz is utilized primaily as a metaphor through which to understand the African American experience.
