La Raison d'État (titre italien : Ragione di stato) est un film franco-italien réalisé par André Cayatte, sorti en 1978.

Synopsis

Un biologiste, Marrot, entre en possession d'un document contenant la preuve de la responsabilité de la France, en particulier un haut fonctionnaire, Jean-Philippe Leroi, dans la mort de 140 enfants africains tués dans leur avion par des missiles français vendus illégalement. Dès son retour, le professeur est victime d'un « accident » de la circulation. Une amie et collaboratrice italienne, Angela Ravelli, se rend immédiatement à Paris pour dénoncer publiquement le scandale, mais Leroi intervient en personne pour lui faire entendre raison.

Chavigny, dans la banlieue de Paris. Joseph Boussard, un homme de la majorité, règne sur la ville. Son adjoint, quelques hommes de main, se chargent des basses besognes. Les élections sont proches. Un colleur d'affiches du camp opposé est tué « accidentellement ». Un témoin gênant est abattu. Le Docteur Peyrac, homme de gauche estimé de tous, accepte de s'engager dans la bataille. Il sera candidat contre Boussard. Comment lui barrer la route ? L'adjoint du maire réussit à obtenir une photo truquée qu'il fait distribuer : On y voit Madame Peyrac « partouzant » dans la résidence de ses amis Leroy. Le montage résiste aux investigations de laboratoire. Mais Peyrac ne cède pas. Le meurtre du photographe, auteur du faux, est l'occasion d'une nouvelle machination. C'est Peyrac qui est accusé de cet assassinat et emprisonné. Sa femme, aidée d'Olga Leroy, réussira-t-elle à prouver son innocence ? Olga a des amis haut placés, plus puissants que Boussard. Le scandale pourrait les éclabousser. Boussard est prié de s'effacer au profit de son adjoint. Peyrac est libéré, mais les amis de la première heure ne sont pas tous là pour l'attendre, à sa sortie de prison.

Aleksey Teodorovic Vlassov (Yul Brynner) is a high ranking KGB official who defects while in France. He has with him highly-classified information as part of a deal with Western intelligence for his arrival in the United States. The debriefing is held at Langley by DCI Allan Davies (Henry Fonda) and MI6 representative Philip Boyle (Dirk Bogarde). Vlassov hands off a list of enemy agents in Western Europe including a deep penetration into NATO. Davies wants to begin operations to arrest the agents; however, those on the list suddenly begin to die off. The CIA also has suspicions over the authenticity of Vlassov's claims. The CIA discovers that a defection photo of Vlassov was taken in the Soviet Union, not in Turkey, judging from the contours of Mt. Ararat in the background. Vlassov also fails a lie detector test after he angrily protests about sexual related questions asked by the CIA during the test.

Malgré tout, elle envoie anonymement le mémo à la presse afin de tenter d'empêcher la guerre qui s'annonce inutile et aux conséquences désastreuses. Mais, en choisissant d'exposer cette vaste conspiration politique, la lanceuse d'alerte met en danger sa vie, son couple, sa liberté et son sens du patriotisme. Car sa décision est considérée comme une trahison aux yeux des services secrets britanniques.
